Domestic Checked Baggage

Check-in Limits

All guests travelling on our domestic network have a 7kg carry-on baggage allowance included in their fare. A guest’s checked baggage allowance is determined by the fare type booked, as set out in the table below.

* A 23kg checked baggage allowance can be purchased online for $12.00, or for $40.00 at the airport.

Note: All guests regardless of fare type or Velocity Status have a 7kg carry-on allowance.

Additional Information

  • Checked baggage that exceeds allowance (in accordance with the table above) will attract excess baggage fees, and will only be accepted and loaded onboard at our discretion.
  • Each piece of baggage must not weigh more than 32kg, or exceed a total linear dimension (length + width + height) of 140cm, per piece. Baggage that exceeds these limits will have to be transported as Freight.

Baggage Fee Exemptions

The following guests are not required to purchase a checked baggage allowance:

Seafood, Meat and Frozen Products

We will only accept seafood/meat/frozen products as checked baggage when packed in the following way:

  • Solid plastic/fibreglass Eskies or Styrofoam boxes with lids. Note: Soft-sided cooler bags and cardboard boxes are NOT permitted.
  • Eskies and Styrofoam boxes must be robust, watertight and in good condition.
  • Seafood/meat/frozen products must be sealed in watertight plastic bags or sealable containers.
  • Wet ice must be packed separately from frozen products, in sealed watertight plastic bags or sealable containers, e.g. frozen water bottles.
  • Absorbent material must be placed in the base of the box/Esky.
  • The total weight of each container, including contents, must not exceed 20kg each.  Weights above 20kg must be referred to Freight.
  • Products must be packaged in a container that does not contain any other items.

Note: Live seafood (e.g. crayfish and mud crabs) must not be carried as checked baggage.  If you wish to transport live seafood you must contact Freight.

Unaccompanied Baggage

We cannot accept checked baggage that is not travelling with a guest.  Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as Freight.

Travelling with Infants

Adults travelling with infants are entitled one additional piece of checked baggage, plus one stroller, bassinet or car seat.

For Virgin Australia international long haul services:

  • To/from USA: one additional piece (maximum 23kg/50lb for Economy, and 32kg/70lb for Business and Premium Economy)
    To/from all other destinations: one additional piece (maximum 10kg/22lb)

Adults accompanying infants are also entitled to one extra piece of carry-on baggage, weighing up to than 7kg (15lb), with dimensions equal to no more than 115cm (45in). 

Sporting Equipment

Sporting equipment may be accepted as checked baggage provided that the item meets the following restrictions:

Each item of sporting equipment represents one piece of the free baggage piece allowance. If an item of sporting equipment plus the checked baggage exceeds the piece allowance, excess baggage will be charged as follows:

  • Bicycles, golf clubs, skis/snowboards and surfboards will be charged at half of the full excess baggage rate on international long haul Virgin Australia operated flights. 
  • All other items will be charged the full excess baggage rate.
  • For information pretaining to Interline and Codeshare partner flights, please refer to the relevant information at the botton of this page.

Excess Baggage Charges

Virgin Australia international long haul services charge excess baggage rates for:

  • Any additional piece of baggage in excess of the baggage allowance (only applicable for flights to/from the US)
  • Any item of baggage that meets the baggage allowance but exceeds the maximum dimensions and/or weight allowance
  • Any additional piece of baggage that also exceeds the weight limitations

Note: Any single piece of checked baggage must not exceed the maximum weight and dimensions as detailed under Oversize and Fragile Pieces. Any piece that exceeds these restrictions must be sent as Freight. In these circumstances we recommend that guests contact their local freight forwarder, who will be able to advise what options are available.

Depending on a guest’s full travel itinerary, different excess baggage rates may apply when travelling on Interline and Codeshare partners.

Unaccompanied Baggage

Due to Government security regulations, Virgin Australia is unable to accept unaccompanied baggage. Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as Freight.

Interline and Codeshare Partners

Virgin Australia international checked baggage allowance and infant baggage allowance applies for all Virgin Australia Codeshare flights. Checked baggage allowance limits, infant baggage allowance and acceptance of sporting equipment for Interline partners will depend on the operating carrier’s allowance for each sector.

Note: Baggage allowances may differ if you are travelling with a codeshare partner to and from the US and stop over on route to your final destination. Please refer to the Delta Airlines website baggage allowance for full information.
