Checked baggage allowance
If you are travelling on our Domestic and International Short Haul network, you will be entitled to the below checked baggage allowance.
Please note:
- Velocity complimentary baggage allowance is based on status at time of travel, not time of booking.
- Additional baggage allowances for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members varies depending on the operating carrier, for Virgin Australia codeshare bookings please refer to non-member allowances.
- Baggage allowances for Reward Seat fares with Velocity airline partners will be based on the operating carrier's baggage allowances as found on their website and as per your class of travel. Refer to your Velocity status page for more information on further benefits.
- If you are travelling with non-standard items such as musical and sporting equipment, please refer to oversized and fragile items
- If you are travelling with one of our partner airlines, please refer to partner fares.
Infants and children
Infants and children are entitled to infant and child items as checked baggage, free of charge, as listed below. For an overview on your travel requirements and options when travelling with infants or children, please visit our specific travel for children.

DO
Purchase extra bags
For Economy fares and purchased checked baggage, items over 23kg may incur overweight baggage fees. IF you need to add bags you can Manage Booking.
Meet size requirements
Make sure your bags meet our checked bag maximum total linear dimension (length+width+height) = 140cm (55in) calculated by adding together the width, height and depth of the piece of baggage.
DON'T
Bring multiple items as one piece
Multiple items held together will not be accepted as a single piece of baggage. Additional baggage fees may apply.
Exceed 32kg
No single item may exceed 32kg. See Cargo services for heavier items.
Leave your bags unaccompanied
Checked baggage that is not travelling with a passenger will not be accepted. Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as cargo.

Up to two additional bags may be purchased online or via the Guest Contact Centre prior to check in. If you need to purchase more than two additional bags, this can be requested at the airport, but as this is subject to availability, there is no guarantee that these additional bags will be accepted.

Additional Baggage Fees per piece (maximum 23kg)
For flights to and from Haneda, Japan, only guests travelling on a Lite fare on Virgin Australia-operated flights may purchase additional checked baggage, online or by calling the Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89. Guests travelling on Choice, Flex, and Business fares are not able to purchase additional checked baggage but are entitled to the checked baggage allowance included in their fare and any additional baggage allowances from their Velocity Status.

For flights to Apia, Samoa, only guests travelling on a Lite fare on Virgin Australia-operated flights may purchase additional checked baggage online or by calling the Guest Contact Centre on 13 67 89. Guests travelling on Choice, Flex, and Business fares are not able to purchase additional checked baggage but are entitled to the checked baggage allowance included in their fare and any additional baggage allowances from their Velocity Status.
For flights from Apia, Samoa, guests can add a maximum of two pieces of baggage at 23kg each per person in addition to any checked baggage allowance included in their fare and any additional baggage allowances from their Velocity Status.

If you change your mind and choose to cancel your flight, fees will not be refunded unless you are entitled to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law.
Where to purchase additional baggage?
Purchase of additional baggage is limited for Haneda, Japan and Apia, Samoa
The purchase of additional baggage is limited for flights to and from Haneda, Japan and Apia, Samoa. The carriage of additional baggage is at the sole discretion of Virgin Australia and is subject to aircraft loads. The purchase of additional baggage at the airport is subject to availability and there is no guarantee of uplift.
We will endeavour to carry your checked baggage on the same flight as you, however, additional and overweight baggage will be accepted on a space-available basis. If your baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you due to operational imitations, it will be transported on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity.
Pre-purchased baggage may only be purchased if you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ticketed and operated flight. For tickets or connecting flights operated by other airlines additional baggage may only be purchased at the airport on the day of departure.
Overweight baggage fees
If you're travelling Economy with a little extra weight, fees will apply at the airport to any piece over 23kg up to 32kg. For items that are over 32kg, please refer to our Cargo services.
Fees are charged at the airport on the day of departure for each additional piece, per one way journey (includes formal connecting flights) as listed below.

Oversized baggage
Oversized baggage such as:
- wheelchairs
- sporting equipment
- bikes
- surfboards, etc.
can be checked in, provided each item does not exceed their baggage weight allowance; otherwise they will be charged with an overweight baggage fee.

Important information about additional baggage
- Checked Baggage has the same meaning as set out in our Conditions of Carriage.
- Fees for additional baggage have been calculated based on average flight times and will not be adjusted based on individual flight time fluctuations.
Restrictions
- The carriage of additional baggage in excess of the allowance included with your fare or Velocity tier allowance is at the discretion of Virgin Australia acting reasonably. For example, Checked Baggage may not be accepted due to operational or commercial factors such as aircraft loads and safety requirements.
- We will endeavour to carry your Checked Baggage on the same flight as you, however, Additional and Overweight Baggage will be accepted on a space-available basis. If your baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you due to operational limitations, it will be transported on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity.
Refunds
If you purchase additional baggage, and you choose to change your flight, your additional baggage will apply to these new flights unless we are not able to carry it. If you purchase additional baggage, and you choose to cancel your additional baggage allowance purchased, any fees paid for your additional baggage will be forfeited.
You will also be entitled to request a refund of the amount paid for additional baggage fees in the following circumstances:
- If we are unable to carry your additional baggage;
- If we cancel your flight and cannot reaccommodate you onto a new flight;
- If we cancel your flight and can reaccommodate you, but cannot carry your additional baggage on your new flight or on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity; or
- If you are entitled to a refund of your fare and/or baggage fees paid for additional baggage under the Australian Consumer Law or other applicable laws.
