Pets

It's natural to want to take the whole family along when you travel, and your furry friends are no exception.

With the right preparation, travelling with your pet can be a great experience for all concerned - but it is important to be well prepared.

Virgin Australia can accommodate pet travel on most domestic flights, where we have appropriate pet handling arrangements in place at each end of the journey. See the "Pet Drop-off Locations' tab for a list of airports where pet travel is accommodated.

Naturally, to keep everyone (including your pet!) safe, there are a few rules and guidelines to follow, as set out below. Virgin Australia reserves the right to refuse carriage of pets when the requirements set out below are not met.

Is my pet suitable for travel?

All pets (excluding authorised Service/Assistance Dogs) travel in the cargo hold of the aircraft, which is temperature controlled like the aircraft cabin. Unfortunately, due to container restrictions, only dogs and cats are accepted for transport when accompanying guests. All other animals will need to be transported using an animal transportation supplier.

Additionally,  your pet must:

  • Be over eight weeks old (this is due to possible dehydration while travelling);
  • Is in good health;
  • Not exceed 65kgs (including the container);
  • Not be unduly aggressive;
  • Be transported in a container which complies with the Virgin Australia guidelines for pet containers and is the correct size for your pet (see Section 5. Container requirements and Container sizing); and
  • Be treated for the Hydatids Tapeworm prior to arrival if travelling to Tasmania.

Some states have specific quarantine requirements. Please ensure you check prior to travel. See the Quarantine section below.

A Veterinary Certificate confirming that your pet is fit for air travel (dated within two weeks of the travel date) is required if the pet is:

  • Pregnant or has given birth within 48 hours of the planned departure time;
  • Over 12 years of age;
  • Between 8 and 12 weeks old;
  • Sick, injured or recovering from surgery;
  • Has been sedated.

This is a restriction that applies on all Virgin Australia flights. All pets with the above-named conditions are flown at the shipper’s risk.

Brachycephalic Breeds

Brachycephalic or snub-nosed dog and cat breeds, including crossbreeds, are more likely to suffer from respiratory distress and heat stress, placing them at significant risk during air travel. It is recommended that the owner/ authorised representative checks with their vet about the suitability of air travel for these breeds. This is a recommendation that applies on all Virgin Australia Flights.

These breeds include, but are not limited to the following:

Dog Breeds Cat Breeds
  • Affenpinscher
  • American Bulldog
  • American Staffordshire Bull Terrier (Staffies)
  • Boston Terrier
  • Boxer
  • Brussels Griffon
  • Bullmastiff
  • Cane Corso
  • Chihuahua (apple-headed)
  • Dogue de Bordeaux
  • English Mastiff
  • French Bulldog
  • Japanese Chin (Japanese Spaniel)
  • English Bulldog
  • King Charles Spaniel
  • Lhasa Apso
  • Neapolitan Mastiff
  • Newfoundland
  • Odle English Bulldogge
  • Pekingese
  • Pug
  • Shar-Pei
  • Shih Tzu
  • Tibetan Spaniel
  • American Burmese
  • British Shorthair
  • Exotic Shorthair
  • Himalayan cat
  • Persian cat
  • Scottish Fold

 All Brachycephalic or snub-nosed breeds (including cross breeds) are flown at the owner/authorised representative’s risk. We strongly recommend pets five years or older of this breed type are not presented for travel due to welfare concerns.

Restricted Breeds

Please note the following dog breeds (including crossbreeds) are prohibited for import into Australia under “The Customs (prohibited imports) Regulations 1956” and will not be accepted for travel:

  • Fila Brasilerio
  • Japanese Tosa
  • Dogo Argentino
  • American Pit Bull and other Pit Bull Breeds
  • Perro de Presa Canario (Presa Canario)

Virgin Australia Cargo Recommendations

To avoid adverse temperatures that may pose a risk to your pet, please avoid booking travel for them during peak temperature periods, such as in the middle of the day.

We strongly recommend that if the temperature is forecast above 20 degrees Celsius and/or it is a multi-sector journey, guests should consider changing your flight to one where the temperature is more conducive to your pet’s comfort

Sedation is NOT recommended for pet air travel unless specifically recommended by your vet. If you wish to sedate your pet for travel, contact your vet for expert advice. A vet certificate will be required for pets sedated for travel. Virgin Australia does not take responsibility for any consequences as a result of sedation.

How to Book

With limited capacity for pets on each flight, please ensure that you book early. To ensure there is room for your pet to travel on your flight, the booking for you and your pet must be made via Guest Contact Centre by calling 13 67 89 (if calling from Australia). For contact numbers for outside of Australia see our Contact Us page.

Container Requirements and Container sizing

It is your responsibility to provide a container for your pet’s travel which complies with the standard required by Virgin Australia. If your pet does not have a travel container which meets our requirements or is not the right size for your pet, we may refuse to accept your pet for transport.

Several reputable suppliers can assist you in selecting the right container to purchase or hire for your pet, including:

The size of the container is very important to the welfare of your pet. The following guidelines must be followed:

  • Your pet must be able to stand with their head up unrestricted by the container; and
  • Your pet must be able to turn around freely within the container.

Additionally, the container must:

  • Have adequate ventilation;
  • Have a water bowl/receptacle affixed to the container;
  • Have escape proof hinges and latches and be adequately locked;
  • Be in good repair and strong enough to withstand damage and ensure the pet cannot escape;
  • Be made of metal or a polypropylene material;
  • Be lined with absorbent material and designed so that no water or excreta can escape;
  • Not exceed a total weight of 65kgs when pet is included inside;
  • Not have any wheels attached;
  • Not be designed to collapse; and
  • Two-part rigid plastic containers must have the top and bottom (or side) parts secured by screws or nuts and bolts (not plastic clips).

Note: Powerful and strong pets can break through plastic and are therefore required to travel in a metal or wooden container as set out in the IATA Regulations e.g. a CR-82 (see picture below).

Generally, only one pet may travel per container, however, up to three pets can travel per container if they meet all of the following criteria:

  • All from the same litter;
  • Under six months old; and
  • Under 14 kgs each.

A maximum of two adult pets of comparable size up to 14kg each, that are compatible for travel, may be shipped in the same container. Pets over 14 kg must travel individually.

Quarantine

Before travelling with your pet, there are some domestic quarantine restrictions you should be familiar with. Please note, it is your responsibility to ensure that your pet meets all quarantine requirements.

Visit the Australian Interstate Quarantine website to check if your pet will be welcome at your destination.

Due to the complexity of quarantine laws (and to guarantee the health of your pet), Virgin Australia will only accept pets for international travel from approved International Pet & Animal Transportation Association (IPATA) pet agents.

Virgin Australia Refusal of Carriage

At all times, Virgin Australia reserves the right to refuse carriage of your pet. This can include, but is not limited to:

  • Safety and security reasons;
  • Compliant container is not supplied; and
  • Animals displaying aggression and visible signs of chewing or container destruction (for breeds not accepted for travel refer to Restricted Breeds section).

What pets can travel as accompanied?

Virgin Australia defines an ‘accompanied’ pet as booked and travelling on the same passenger reservation in the cargo hold.

An accompanied pet is:

  • Dogs (excluding racing greyhounds and restricted breeds, see Section 1 above)
  • Cats

This does not pertain to service/assistance dogs that are required to travel in the cabin. that do not need a permit to travel

What will be my pet’s experience when travelling in the cargo hold?

We will endeavor to maintain the temperature in the cargo hold to be consistent to the temperature experienced in the passenger cabin, lighting will dim lit this is to maximise your pet’s level of comfort.

Your pet maybe be exposed to high levels of airport operation noise whilst waiting to be loaded into the aircraft hold, please take this into consideration when organising your pet’s journey.

What happens to my pet during a disruption?

Our priority is to safely and securely transport your pet from Point A to Point B.

However, due to the complex environment surrounding airport operations, there may be instances where our flight operation is subjected to unforeseen disruptions e.g. adverse weather activity.

Your pet will be moved to a shaded, well ventilated area and frequently monitored if disruptions do occur.

If the delay exceeds greater than 2 hours or if we are unable to accommodate your pet on another service on the same day (including but not limited to cancellations and or connection flights missed at a transit port), our team will contact you to organise an alternative option of travel.

Should I sedate my pet?

No, Virgin Australia does not recommend sedating your pet for travel. If you wish to sedate your pet for travel, please contact your vet for expert advice. A vet certificate will be required for pets sedated for travel. Virgin Australia does not take responsibility for any consequences as a result of sedation.

What can be included in my pet’s container?
