Items allowed onboard

In addition to the carry-on baggage allowance, one of the following personal items may be carried in the cabin:

  • A laptop computer*, handbag, pocketbook or purse (of reasonable size)
  • A wrap, a blanket, or an overcoat
  • An umbrella or a walking stick
  • A small camera or pair of binoculars
  • A reasonable amount of reading matter
  • A pair of crutches or prosthetic devices – for use, provided that the guest is dependent on them for mobility

Given to considerable enhancement of aviation security measures and screening equipment in recent years, the Australian Government have removed the following items from the Prohibited Items list. These items are permitted to be carried onboard:

  • Knitting and crochet needles
  • Fork with square-ended or round-ended tines and a non-detachable handle that is round-ended
  • Blunt-ended or round-ended scissors with blades less than 6cm long
  • Pointed metal nail files and nail clippers
  • Disposable or safety razors

Due to the number of items passing through security, it is not possible to list them all. Security screening officers are responsible for ensuring security standards are met and have the final say about what items are permitted.

Musical instruments

Small musical instruments can be taken onboard as carry-on baggage provided that each instrument does not exceed dimensions of 85cm x 34cm x 23cm (total linear dimensions 142cm).

Each musical instrument counts towards your carry-on allowance - substituting for a piece with total linear dimensions of 105cm. View more information on musical instruments in oversized and fragile items.

The only items that can occupy a seat (apart from a guest) are a cello or a guitar. Guests planning to travel with a cello or guitar should call the Guest Contact Centre to book an extra seat.

Powders, liquids, aerosols and gels

Guests are permitted to carry liquids, aerosols, and/or gels (with caps) in containers with a maximum capacity of 100ml each. All containers must fit comfortably inside a single one litre transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which must be completely sealed. Each guest is permitted up to one bag and this bag may need to be presented separately at the security screening point.

Refer to Powders, Liquids, Aerosols and Gels Restrictions for more information.

Additional security measures for travel to the USA

The United States Government security organization - Transport Security Administration (TSA) requires enhanced security measures at select overseas airports with direct flights to the U.S. This may involve some guests undergoing additional screening measures at departure gates. Some additional measures may also involve examination and/or restrictions on some personal electronic devices (PEDs).
Should you:

  • Refuse or fail to comply with any of the screening requirements
  • Be unable to remove the protective casing from a personal electronic device that must undergo additional screening
  • Have a personal electronic device that may show signs of tampering or signs of modification
  • Have an item in your carry on baggage (including personal electronic devices) which cannot be cleared by Security Officer and/or Law Enforcement Officer
  • Either your item and/or yourself may be denied uplift.
  • For further information on TSA enhanced security measures, refer to the TSA website

Medical assistance items (CPAP machines, crutches, wheelchairs, etc) are exempt from the restrictions detailed above.

Guests who require sharp items such as syringes for medical use (e.g. diabetics), provisions are in place to allow for these items to be carried onboard an aircraft. Refer to specific needs and assistance for more information.

Guests travelling with infants may carry on an extra bag containing articles for use in the cabin such as nappies and baby food.

Certain guest comfort items, including kids’ sleeping devices, are now permitted for use on board Virgin Australia aircraft. Items such as Plane Pal, Fly Tot and Jetkids Bedbox are approved for use provided they meet the Guidelines for Use. Guest comfort items are included in your 7kg hand luggage allowance. For more information see Travelling with Children

Prohibited items and weapons

Sporting goods with sharp edges or points capable of injuring a person, sharp objects which may be capable of causing harm by perforation, blunt items that are able to be used to bludgeon a person, household flammable goods, items capable of being used to restrain a person and weapons cannot be taken through airport security screening points. We recommend guests place these items in their checked baggage prior to check-in.

Some common examples include:

  • Saws, screwdrivers and hammers
  • Firearms
  • Pointed scissors or scissors with blades longer than 6cms
  • Flares
  • Disabling devices such as Tasers or pepper/OC spray
  • Baseball, softball and cricket bats
  • Billiard, pool or snooker cues
  • Martial arts equipment such as numchucks and knuckle dusters
  • Hockey sticks and golf clubs
  • Fireworks
  • Petrol
  • Cable ties and handcuffs

If it is identified at a passenger screening point you are in possession of a prohibited item or weapon, you will be asked to either make alternative arrangements for the article or you must surrender it to the security personnel.

Inflatable items

All inflatable items must be deflated before they are permitted as carry-on baggage. Inflated items must travel in the hold of the aircraft as checked baggage. This includes inflated sports balls (i.e. footballs and basketballs).

Most countries largely remain consistent with what items are considered prohibited items and weapons, however for further clarification, visit:

Cabin safety

Carry-on baggage limits exist due to the limited space in the aircraft cabin, as well as the importance we place on the comfort and safety of our guests and crew.

Carry-on baggage that exceeds these weight or size limits pose a safety risk and may cause injury to our guests or crew. These items are not permitted in the aircraft cabin and will need to be checked into the aircraft’s hold by our team at the boarding gate. On arrival, these items will be available for collection at the baggage carousel in the arrivals hall. Additional charges may apply.

If your carry-on baggage exceeds the permitted size and/or weight, we recommend relocating items to your checked baggage, or pre-purchasing additional checked baggage online.
