With Australian school holidays looming once again, no doubt families across the country are eagerly searching for holiday destinations to keep the family entertained. It’s safe to say that Fiji has cemented itself as one of the world’s top destinations for family holidays, with kids clubs at most major resorts, stunning golden beaches and a plethora of activities on both land and see for the whole family to enjoy.

While best known for its beaches, snorkelling and spa resorts, there are so many things to do in Fiji there are plenty of sites and experiences awaiting visitors who want to explore beyond the usual tourist hotspots, and all accessible from the main resort island of Denarau.

Here are four unique adventures for the family to get you started.

1. Hop on board an off-road cave safari

Experience the stunning beauty of Fiji’s interior with an off-road safari tour to the Naihehe Cave. Journey through the spectacular rainforest landscape of the Sigatoka Valley and across the Sigatoka River to the home of the bete or priest, the traditional guardian of the cave where you will participate in a customary welcome ceremony. Once home to Fiji’s Sautabu people during the country’s tribal warfare days, you will marvel at the size of the cave as your guided tour takes you through the Grand Cathedral Chamber and past hidden chambers and ritual artefacts. Marvel at natural springs, stalactites and stalagmites as you pass.

2. Take a scenic helicopter ride

Explore Fiji’s stunning landscape with a scenic helicopter ride and marvel at the stunning blue-green beauty of pristine ocean waters dotted with islands, lush tropical rainforests and inland mountain ranges. Plenty of operators work the Fijian skies, with flights over Denarau, the Mamanuca Islands and inland over the Mt Evans Ranges to the Garden of the Sleeping Giant being amongst the most popular experiences.

3. Visit Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park

Located near the mouth of the Sigatoka River, the Sigatoka Sand Dunes National Park is home to the enormous, grey-brown Sigatoka Sand Dunes. One of the largest burial sites in the Pacific region, the park protects many significant cultural and historical relics including pottery believed to be more than 2600 old, stone tools and the remains of some of Fiji’s earliest inhabitants. Explore the dunes and the abundant array of unique wildlife making their home in the foliage with a self-guided walk or seek out an onsite ranger for a guided tour.

4. Take a mud bath at Sabeto Hot Springs

Located an easy 20 minute drive from Nadi, the geothermal springs of Sabeto Thermal Mud Pool and Hot Springs offer a great experience for the whole family. Immerse yourself in the naturally therapeutic mud bath before rinsing off in the clean water springs. Finish off this traditional Fijian pampering session with a soothing massage offered by local villages. Located in the beautiful Sabeto Valley and with three naturally occurring pools believed by the locals to contain healing properties, the springs are a growing Fijian attraction for tourists and locals alike.
