The Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment system is now offered on selected flights operated by equipped Boeing 737-800 and Embraer 190 aircraft. Tips & Tricks

  • Silverlight® is not supported in ChromeTM browser
  • Ensure latest versions of BOTH Microsoft Silverlight® & Safari® browser are installed on device. Latest version information & software downloads can be found here:
  • Load the test page while connected to the internet to check that the version of MS Silverlight® and Safari® installed on your laptop are compatible with the Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment System.
  • If your laptop is compatible with our entertainment system, a short video will be played then the ‘Start’ screen will appear (see screenshot of Start screen below). It may take a few minutes for the video to load, please be patient.
  • If the video on the above test page does not play, restart your computer then load the test page again.
  • If the video still doesn’t play, please contact IFE.Feedback@virginaustralia.com for further troubleshooting assistance. Screenshots of any error messages you are encountering would be helpful.

Tips for Silverlight on Windows devices:

1. Videos will only work if the device is connected to the Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment system on-board an aircraft. Users who are not connected to the on-board system may successfully load the On-Ground Portal, which is accessed via the Test Page link (www.boardconnect.aero/?ac=va). The test link will allow users to navigate the system and preview content available for the current month, however videos will not play due to licensing restrictions which limit viewing to the in-flight environment only.

2. Microsoft Silverlight is not supported on Microsoft Edge or Google Chrome browsers. Users must use Internet Explorer as their web browser when connecting to the Virgin Australia Wireless In-flight Entertainment system.

3. Windows 10 Users - Internet Explorer must be launched from Desktop Mode, not via the Metro (apps) Interface.

4. Ensure latest version of Internet Explorer is installed (currently version 11)

Wireless In-flight Entertainment

Wireless In-flight Entertainment is unavailable on trans continental flights 

Virgin Australia offers Wireless In-flight Entertainment on equipped Boeing 737-800 and Embraer 190 aircraft, operating on domestic and international short haul routes. This state-of-the-art system provides access to hundreds of hours of movies, TV shows and music, all available on your own device#.

The system can easily be accessed on Wi-Fi-enabled iPad®, iPhone®, iPod touch® devices; Android devices; and laptops with Microsoft® Silverlight®. To ensure your device is system ready, visit the Getting Started tab and follow the instructions to download the App or software.

Tablets provided by Virgin Australia

Virgin Australia has a limited number of In-flight Entertainment Tablets available on selected flights for complimentary use by Business Class guests. On some flights you can use the Tablet to access Wireless In-flight Entertainment; on others, the Tablet offers a pre-loaded selection of movies, TV shows and music.

Our award-winning in-flight seatback entertainment is available complimentary to all guests travelling on international long haul services. seatback entertainment entertains all ages with an extensive range of new release and classic movies, TV favourites, engaging games and mood-satisfying music, delivered through a touch-screen and handset-controlled system.

In-seat Power

We have installed power outlets to power your electronic devices.

Power provided is at USA power standards of 110V AC 60 cycles (Hz) – NOT Australian power standards of 220V AC 50 cycles (Hz). The maximum power draw is 150 watts.  The system will automatically check to make sure there is not too much power draw.

The outlet unit will accept almost all plug types, including US two or three-pin, Australian and New Zealand two or three-pin, and European and UK three-pin.

Where can I plug in my device?

  • Business – located between seats, below the audio jack and USB port
  • Premium Economy – below the seat
  • Economy – cabin crew can assist guests with charging devices 

USB Connectivity

Connect a compatible device to our in-seat USB port, to view photos, display Adobe Acrobat files (PDFs), and listen to MP3 music files, via our in-flight entertainment system.

Cameras, MP3 players, USB storage/flash drives, SD card readers are all compatible. Our systems cater for anything that has a USB plug and is a USB mass media device – but doesn't require special software to be loaded onto our system. Note: For safety reasons we only accept specific file types, under a maximum file size.

If your device enables charging via USB, simply plug it into the USB port.

Virgin Australia’s state-of-the-art in-flight entertainment is designed to delight all guests, including those who are visually or hearing impaired.

International long haul and transcontinental flights

On international long haul flights (777 aircraft) and transcontinental flights (A330 aircraft), we have a selection of movies and safety information videos available with closed captions (CC). These materials are clearly marked on our cutting-edge touch-screen system. Just go to Video Settings to activate the function when playing a movie.

Domestic and short haul international flights

On domestic and short haul international flights (wireless enabled 737 and E190 aircraft), we have a selection of movies available with closed captions (CC). These movies are clearly marked in their own collection, simply click on the CC to activate this function when playing a movie.

Apple iOS for iPhone and iPad offers inbuilt screen reader VoiceOver for the visually impaired. Press and hold the home button to activate Siri. Request Siri activates Accessibility/VoiceOver. The VoiceOver screen reader will convert buttons and text into a synthetic voice. Please note: a headset will be required.

For Android smartphone and tablets, the TalkBack screen reader for the visually impaired can be downloaded through Google Play. If preinstalled, access your device settings menu and select Accessibly/Vision/TalkBack. The TalkBack screen reader will convert buttons and text into a synthetic voice. About Wireless in Flight Entertainment

What is Wireless In-flight Entertainment?

Wireless In-flight Entertainment is a new state-of-the-art entertainment system that allows you to wirelessly stream content to your own portable device onboard. There is a server on the aircraft that holds the content and it is distributed to your device through wireless access points located throughout the aircraft.

Is Wireless In-flight Entertainment available on all aircraft?

Virgin Australia is progressively rolling out Wireless In-flight Entertainment across its domestic and international short haul fleet. The system is offered on selected flights operated by equipped Boeing 737-800 and Embraer E190 aircraft.

Accessing and Using Wireless in Flight Entertainment

How can I access Wireless In-flight Entertainment?

If you’re using an iPad®, iPhone®, iPod touch® or Android phone or tablet, you will need to ensure you have downloaded the App prior to departure. You can download Virgin Australia's In-flight Entertainment Apps from the App StoreSM or Google Play Store.

If you are using a laptop, you simply need to have downloaded the correct version of Microsoft® Silverlight® software, and then load the Wireless In-flight Entertainment test page while connected to the internet to confirm that your software settings are compatible.

Can I use the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system if I have not downloaded a Virgin Australia In-flight Entertainment App or Microsoft Silverlight?

No. The Wireless In-flight Entertainment system requires the correct App or Silverlight to be downloaded on your device prior to departure.

What does gate to gate entertainment mean?

Personal electronic devices weighing less than 1kg, are now permitted for use during all stages of flight (from departure gate to arrival gate), provided flight mode is selected. Gate to gate entertainment means that you can access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment on smart phones and tablets, from the moment you take your seat onboard the aircraft, until it’s time to disembark at your destination.

Please listen to Cabin Crew announcements on board to confirm that you are able to use your device throughout your journey in flight mode, and don’t forget to pause and listen to your Cabin Crew during the pre-flight safety briefing. 

Can I access the Internet or use social media applications?

No, you cannot access the Internet or use social media applications. The wireless signal your device receives is local to the aircraft only, and is not connected to the Internet.

Can I use voice or SMS services during flight on an aircraft equipped with Wireless In-flight Entertainment?

Mobile phone services (voice and SMS) are not available during flight.

When can I connect to the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system?

Virgin Australia guests using compatible smart phones or tablets weighing less than 1kg can now access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system from the moment they take their seat until they arrive at their destination.

Guests using a laptop or device weighing more than 1kg can use the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system once the fasten seatbelt sign is turned off after take-off until it is illuminated again for landing.

Do I still need to select Flight Mode on my phone / tablet?

If your compatible smart phone or tablet weighs less than 1kg, then you are able to use the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system through your journey, in flight mode, on Boeing 737 and Embraer 190 aircraft.. To access your entertainment, be sure to enable Wi-Fi after switching to flight mode and connect to the ‘VirginAustralia’ network.

What if I don’t have my own compatible device?

Virgin Australia Business class and Premium Economy guests will be provided with Tablets for complimentary use while on board. On some flights the Tablets can be used to access Wireless In-flight Entertainment; on others, the Tablets offer a pre-loaded selection of movies, TV shows and music. Find out more about other In-flight Entertainment options that may be available.

Is streaming through Wi-Fi technology safe? Why can I now have the Wi-Fi settings on my device turned on during flight?

Wi-Fi streaming in-flight is completely safe on board aircraft with the correctly installed Wireless In-flight Entertainment system. Virgin Australia has undertaken extensive testing and has received approval for use of the system from the relevant aviation safety authorities.

I used to have to “activate” the App after downloading or updating it – is this still required?

We have improved the functionality of our In-flight Entertainment App so that it is fully configured as part of the download (and update) process. It is no longer necessary to activate the App.

Microsoft Silverlight

I have Microsoft Silverlight installed but I cannot connect to the Wireless
In-flight Entertainment system - why?

You need to ensure you have the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight installed on your laptop with the correct settings configured to be able to connect to the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system. You can check you have a compatible version of Silverlight with the correct settings by loading the test page while connected to the internet.

My laptop runs Windows 8 and has the latest version of Microsoft Silverlight – why might I be encountering a “plug-in” error message when trying to access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system?

Windows 8 has two browsers, both called Internet Explorer. One browser is accessible from the Metro interface, while the other browser is accessible only from the desktop environment. While the desktop browser allows the use of plug-ins like Silverlight, the Metro browser does not. As a result, the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system is only accessible in the desktop environment. If you are using Windows 8 with Silverlight® and encounter a plug-in error message when trying to access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system, please ensure that you are using the browser from the desktop.

What content will be available?

You will be able to access hundreds of hours of movies, TV shows and music. There is also a survey, so you can tell us about your experience.

Can I control when the content starts and stops?

You can control the viewing of the content. Just keep in mind the length of your flight so that you don’t miss the end of your program!

Can I continue to access Wireless In-flight Entertainment content after my flight?

You can only access the Wireless In-flight Entertainment system while on board the aircraft.
