If your trip involves flight segments operated by an airline other than Virgin Australia, then different baggage allowances may apply.


Note: Free baggage allowance is generally displayed on your emailed ticket receipt as guidance. If your trip is booked on separate tickets, then the baggage allowance applicable for each separate ticket applies.

Trips booked using points

Points used from Velocity Frequent Flyer

If you have booked a one-way or return trip using Velocity Frequent flyer Points or Points & Pay to book a ‘Reward’ seat, then the checked baggage allowance of the partner airline operating the international flight segments on the ticket will apply to the full trip.

The Reward seat icon will display next to the flight you are selecting. 

If you have booked a one-way or return trip using points & pay that is not a ‘Reward Seat’, Virgin Australia Baggage allowances will apply.

Points used from a loyalty program of a partner airline

If you used points through a loyalty program of one of our partner airlines to book a flight that is operated by Virgin Australia, please check with the partner loyalty program if you have any queries around checked baggage allowances.

Trips involving partner airlines booked on a Virgin Australia ticket

Bookings on a Virgin Australia issued ticket

  • If you have booked a one-way or return trip on a single Virgin Australia issued ticket, the Virgin Australia fare rules and checked baggage allowances will apply to all flights in your trip. 
  • For journeys involving partners these are slightly different depending on where you are flying and which partner is operating your flights. 
  • This does not apply to trips to or from the United States and Canada (please see the separate section below).

How to know if your booking is a Virgin Australia issued ticket

  • This applies to Virgin Australia tickets issued directly through Virgin Australia sales channels, but also tickets issued through travel agents and distribution partners. 
  • If you are travelling on a Virgin Australia issued ticket, the first three digits of your 13 digit ticket number will be 795. 
  • See your Virgin Australia Itinerary or Travel Agent issued itinerary.

Where to find your baggage allowance

  • Your free baggage allowance is generally displayed on your ticket receipt as guidance.

The following information may assist you to determine the baggage allowance that apply to your trip.

Qatar Airways operated flights

Choice: 25kg total
Flex: 30kg total
Business: 40kg total (maximum allowance 32kg per bag)

All Nippon Airways operated flights

Choice: 1 x 23kg

United Airlines operated flights

Trips involving Virgin Australia operated flights, booked on a partner airline’s ticket

Bookings on a partner airline issued ticket

  • If you have booked a one-way or return journey on a single ticket issued by a partner airline, the partner airline’s fare rules and checked baggage allowances may apply. 
  • Your free baggage allowance is generally displayed on your ticket receipt as guidance, and for more information you may wish to check with the airline that issued your ticket, or with your travel agent. 

How to know if your booking is a partner airline issued ticket

  • If the first three digits of your 13 digit ticket number are 795, you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ticket and the Virgin Australia checked baggage allowance will apply. 
  • If the first three digits of your 13 digit ticket number do not begin with 795, then your ticket has been issued by another airline. 
  • Please check the other airlines website for information on the checked baggage allowance that applies for your journey.
  • This does not apply to journeys to or from the United States and Canada (please see the separate section below).

Baggage allowance for loyalty tiered members

  • In addition to your standard checked baggage allowance, you may be entitled to check in additional bags free of charge based on your membership tier of Velocity Frequent Flyer. 
  • More information on your tier entitlements, please refer to Velocity Frequent Flyer status.

Trips to or from the United States (including Hawaii) or Canada

  • If you have booked a one-way or return journey on a single ticket where the ultimate ticketed origin or destination is the United States or Canada, some government regulations may govern which baggage provisions may apply to all flights on the ticket.
  • These regulations require that the carrier who’s airline designator appears on the first flight on the ticket will select the baggage provisions that will apply across all flights on the ticket. This airline is the “selecting airline”.
  • The baggage provisions that will apply across the entire ticket include the checked baggage allowance and the excess baggage charges.
  • Where the first flight on the ticket is a Codeshare flight (where the flight is listed on the ticket with the airline designator of an airline other than the airline operating the flight), then the marketing airline (the airline whose airline designator is listed on the ticket) is the selecting airline.

How to Recognise a Codeshare Flight

Even if the first flight on your ticket is operated by our partner airline, if it has been booked through Virgin Australia and appears with the “VA” designator next to the flight number, then VA will be the “selecting airline” for the entire journey.

Under regulations in the United States and Canada, a selecting airline is entitled to apply their own baggage provisions to the entire journey, or to apply baggage provisions of the Most Significant Carrier across the journey, as defined in IATA Resolution 302.

If Virgin Australia is the selecting carrier

  • Where Virgin Australia is the selecting carrier, Virgin Australia will always select its own baggage provisions, and these will apply for the full trip. 
  • This includes the checked baggage allowance and the excess baggage charges.

If a partner airline is the selecting carrier

  • Where United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Delta Air Lines or Air Canada are the selecting carrier, these airlines will apply their own baggage provisions for the full journey. 
  • This includes the checked baggage allowance and the excess baggage charges. Please check the other airlines website for information on the checked baggage allowance that applies for your journey.
  • Where another airline is the selecting carrier, that carrier may apply their own provisions or defer to the provisions of the Most Significant Carrier. 
  • This situation will not occur on a ticket sold by Virgin Australia. 
  • You should check with the airline with whom your journey was booked and ticketed for information in this circumstance.

Carry on baggage allowance for trips involving partner airlines booked on other airlines tickets

  • Carry on baggage allowances and restrictions will always follow the policies of the airline operating each flight. 
  • Where your trip involves flights operated by our partner airlines, you can check the policy of each operating airline on their website.

Excess Baggage

  • If you wish to check in bags in excess of your checked baggage allowance, you will be charged an excess baggage fee by the airline that is accepting your bags for check-in.

Where Virgin Australia accepts your bags at check-in

  • Where Virgin Australia is the airline accepting your bags for check-in, and you are connecting onto flights operated by Air Canada, Air India, Air New Zealand, Air Mauritius, Aircalin, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, China Southern,  Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, Hainan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Juneyao Air, Korean Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Solomon Airlines, South African Airways, Thai Airways, T’Way Air and United Airlines, Virgin Australia will collect the total excess baggage charge across the flights over which your baggage will be checked. 
  • You will not need to pay any further excess baggage charges and should carry your excess baggage charge receipt with you until you collect your baggage.
  • Where Virgin Australia is the airline accepting your bags for check-in, and you are connecting onto flights operated by any other partner airline, Virgin Australia will collect the excess baggage charges relating to the Virgin Australia operated flight only, even though your bag will be checked through onto your connecting flight.

  • When you board your connecting flight, the partner airline may collect their own excess baggage charges from you according to their own Excess baggage policy. 
  • You can check the Excess Baggage Policy of each partner airline on their website.

Where a partner or other airline accepts your bags at check-in

  • Where the airline accepting your bags for check-in is Air Canada, Air India, Air New Zealand, Air Mauritius, Aircalin, All Nippon Airways, British Airways, China Southern,  Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, Hainan Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines, Juneyao Air, Korean Airlines, Philippine Airlines, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, Solomon Airlines, South African Airways, Thai Airways, T’Way Air and United Airlines, Air Canada, Air Mauritius, Aircalin, All Nippon Airways, Delta Air Lines, Etihad Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines and United Airlines  and you are connecting onto flights operated by Virgin Australia, the partner will collect the total excess baggage charge across the flights over which your baggage will be checked including the Virgin Australia operated flight. 
  • You will not need to pay any further excess baggage charges to Virgin Australia and should carry your excess baggage charge receipt with you until you collect your baggage. 
  • The excess baggage charge will be collected according to the partner airlines policy. 
  • You can check the Excess Baggage Policy of each partner airline on their website. 
  • Where the airline accepting your bags is any other of Virgin Australia’s partner airlines, and you are connecting onto flights operated by Virgin Australia, the partner airline will collect the excess baggage charges relating to their own operated flights only, even though your bag will be checked through onto your connecting flight with Virgin Australia. 
  • You may be required to pay an Excess Baggage charge to Virgin Australia.

International excess baggage fees (Long Haul Partner Operated Services)

  • Additional baggage may be purchased at the airport if you are travelling on a service operated by the below airline and your ticket number begins with 795.
