Thursday 2 July 2026: Virgin Australia is ripping up the rulebook on flexible travel, today becoming the only Australian airline to offer eligible guests travelling on a domestic Economy Flex fare access to Fly Ahead, enabling them to switch to an available earlier same-day flight through the Virgin Australia app, with no change fee or fare difference*.
The new app feature offers a significant shift from traditional flexible fares, which typically require travellers to pay a change fee and fare difference when changing flights. Virgin Australia Fly Ahead could deliver meaningful cost savings for frequent travellers, particularly those flying for business.
The value of that added flexibility is already clear, with data showing more than 44,000 Virgin Australia guests moved to earlier flights over the past 12 months, saving a combined 143,000 hours in airport dwell time. Expanding the Fly Ahead app feature, first launched for high tier Velocity Frequent Flyer members in May 2026, to domestic Economy Flex fare guests means more travellers can get on their way sooner when plans change, spend less time waiting at the airport, and enjoy greater flexibility throughout their journey.
With 65 per cent of business travellers saying flexibility influences their choice of airline#, this enhancement provides the control and convenience important to Virgin Australia's corporate customers and Virgin Australia Business Flyer members (the airline’s dedicated SME loyalty program), while strengthening the airline's appeal in the business travel market.
Commentary
Virgin Australia Group Executive, Libby Minogue, said the expansion of Fly Ahead reflects the airline's commitment to listening to guests and delivering meaningful flexibility when plans change.
"At Virgin Australia, we listen closely to our guests, and one thing we hear consistently, particularly from our business travellers, is that they want more flexibility and control when plans change," said Ms Minogue.
"That's why we're proud to be the only Australian airline offering superior flexibility to our Flex ticket holders, allowing them to switch to an available earlier same-day flight via the Virgin Australia app, without incurring a change fee or fare difference. The change will help our guests get home sooner, make an earlier meeting or maximise their time.
"We also know that delivering value is more important than ever as households and businesses continue to navigate cost-of-living and inflationary pressures. This enhancement gives our guests greater flexibility without the added costs often associated with changing travel plans, reinforcing our commitment to offering value where it matters most. It's a simple change that delivers real value,” she said.
Expanding Fly Ahead access to eligible Flex fare guests reflects Virgin Australia’s continued focus on delivering customer-led innovation. In recent years, the airline has introduced a range of industry-leading initiatives, including baggage tracking, an all-in-one flight search tool, and a new airport check-in experience that reduces the check-in time by up to 50 per cent^ at participating airports.

NOTES TO EDITOR
TERMS AND CONDITIONS
1Standard Economy Flex fare conditions continue to apply to flight changes made through Manage Booking. Eligible guests must request Fly Ahead through the Virgin Australia app or at the airport to avoid a change fee or fare difference.
^Based on analysis of historical transaction time data compared with future state performance observed during a one-week live trial at Mackay Airport where the upgrades were deployed. The trial incorporated transaction timing analysis, user testing and behavioural observations across a sample of travellers, indicating check-in times of up to 50% faster.
*Fly Ahead is available to eligible guests who have purchased an Economy Flex fare (excluding group or team travel bookings), and up to three accompanying guests travelling on the same booking, on eligible domestic Virgin Australia marketed and operated flights. Fly Ahead requests may only be made on the day of travel via the Virgin Australia app or at the airport and are subject to seat availability and operational requirements. The requested earlier flight must be on the same route and same day as the guest’s original ticketed domestic Virgin Australia marketed and operated flight. Requests via the Virgin Australia app must be made at least 60 minutes before scheduled departure of the desired earlier flight, while the flight is still open for check-in. For flights between Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne, eligible guests may request a flight departing up to 2 hours prior to their booked flight. For all other eligible domestic Virgin Australia flights, guests may request the first available flight prior to their booked flight. Requests at the airport must be made at least 40 minutes before scheduled departure of the desired earlier flight, while the flight is still open for check-in. Guests cannot request Fly Ahead if they have already checked in their baggage. If a Fly Ahead request is granted, and the guest and any accompanying guests (if applicable) are moved to an earlier Virgin Australia flight and select a seat of a lower value than originally purchased, no refund will be provided (unless they are entitled to a refund under Australian Consumer Law). Standard Economy Flex fare conditions continue to apply to all other booking changes and cancellations. See the Fly Ahead on Flex Terms and Conditions for more information.
