About Us

Resource Management

We understand the importance of reducing our environmental impacts to improve the sustainability of our business into the future. Key to achieving this is to ensure that our business strives to efficiently manage the resources that we use throughout our operations.

We focus on continual improvement and the implementation of key reduction measures, Virgin Australia has been able to reduce our water usage in our recently renovated lounges as well as our offices across the network. We also have a comprehensive energy reduction strategy, which includes lighting upgrades across our facilities. In FY15 our Brisbane hangar lighting was upgraded and our Melbourne hangar will be upgraded during FY17 leading to improved amenity and significant reductions in electricity usage.

To complement our in-flight recycling efforts, we reduce food waste through donations to Oz Harvest, repurpose our amenity kits and pyjamas to MNH Sustainable Cabin Services and our staff hotel amenities to Project Angel Food in LA. Our staff uniforms are donated to Dress for Success in New Zealand and coffee grounds are repurposed to Life Cykel to grow oyster mushrooms.

It is important for Virgin Australia to ensure the cargo we carry meets our high ethical standards. This is why in June 2016 we signed the Buckingham Palace Declaration (hyperlinked to the declaration) as part of our participation in the United for Wildlife Transport Taskforce. Working with our partner airlines we can collectively play an important role in reducing the trade in illegal plants and wildlife.
