Check-in Allowances

information  Important Information: We have changed our checked baggage policy from a weight system to a piece system.

The allowances outlined below refer to our piece-based baggage policy and apply to bookings that have been created or changed on or after 16 May 2012. The weight allowance policy applies to bookings created or changed prior to this date.

Note: New bookings made through third party systems may still use the old weight allowance policy for several days after 16 May 2012. If you have concerns about your booking, please contact your travel agent, or our Guest Contact Centre.

A guest’s checked baggage allowance is determined by the fare type booked and Velocity membership level, as set out in the table below.

  • Pre-arranged baggage: You can pre-arrange checked baggage up to a maximum of three pieces up to one hour before your flight's departure. This may include any combination of baggage pieces included in your fare allowance, your Velocity membership level, or that you have pre-purchased online or through the Guest Contact Centre.
  • Purchase at check-in: Baggage pieces can be purchased at the airport for a higher fee. For more information view our fees and surcharges page.
  • Up to nine baggage pieces in total (including bags that have been pre-arranged) may be checked in per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia (subject to space availability). Some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type (e.g. ATRs) or carrier (e.g. Skywest).

To minimise additional baggage fees, we suggest, where possible, you place several items or bags into one bag, case or box to count as one piece – provided it does not exceed the maximum size or weight of your baggage allowance.

For example when travelling with a bike you can place additional items in your bike box such as spare wheels, tools, towels, clothes etc. as long as the box remains within the size and weight limits of your allowance. To avoid delays at the service counter, we suggest you make these precautions prior to arriving at the airport.

Baggage Limits

  • Each piece of baggage must not weigh more than 32kg, or exceed a total linear dimension of 140cm (length + width + height), per piece. Baggage that exceeds these limits must be transported as Freight. Guests should contact Freight Services on 13 15 06 before arriving at the airport.
  • Checked baggage that exceeds a piece weight limit of 23kg will attract an overweight baggage fee and will only be accepted and loaded onboard at our discretion. Guests travelling in Business or Velocity Platinum and Gold members do not have to pay an overweight baggage fee.

Note:

  • For more information regarding baggage items that exceed these limits, please refer to our Oversized Items section.
