Guests travelling on our Domestic network are allocated a checked baggage allowance, for adults and children, detailed below.

For Domestic flights, each piece of baggage must not exceed a total linear dimension (length + width + height) of 140cm (55in). For items that do not fit within these dimensions, please refer to Oversized and Fragile Items.

Please note:

  • No single item may exceed 32kg
  • For all guests travelling on Economy fares, any piece exceeding 23kg will attract an overweight baggage fee.
  • For Velocity members, the complimentary baggage allowance is applied will be based on a member's status at time of travel, rather than time of booking.
  • Additional baggage allowances for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members only apply for flights operated by Virgin Australia. Additional baggage allowances for Velocity Silver, Gold and Platinum members do not apply when travelling on codeshare or interline services operated by other carriers.
  • Baggage allowances for Reward Seat fares with Velocity airlines partners will be based on the operating carrier’s baggage allowances as found on their website and as per your class of travel. Silver, Gold and Platinum members may be entitled to further complimentary baggage allowances, as outlined at the Velocity Frequent Flyer website. 

 

Pre-Purchased Additional Baggage (Online/Guest Contact Centre)

Guests have the option to pre-purchase up to two pieces of baggage in addition to any included baggage allowance. Additional baggage allowances must be purchased before check in. Additional fees will apply when adding baggage via the Guest Contact Centre.

  • Only Guests holding a Virgin Australia (795) ticket number are permitted to pre-purchase baggage. If you cancel your flight, you may be entitled to a refund in accordance with the fare rules.
  • Baggage fees are subject to change at any time without notice.
  • The carriage of additional baggage is at the sole discretion of Virgin Australia and is subject to aircraft loads.

 

Excess Baggage (At the Airport)

We recommend that you pre-purchase additional baggage allowance before your check-in. A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of pre-purchased or included baggage allowances. Fees are charged for each additional piece, per one-way journey (includes formal connecting flights).

In addition, please note the following general guidelines and restrictions.

  • Pieces over 32kg will not be accepted and need to be sent via freight
  • Up to 9 pieces of baggage allowance in total, including baggage entitlement, pre purchased baggage and excess baggage, may be checked in per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia. Some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type e.g. ATRs or carrier.
  • Virgin Australia accepts excess baggage on a space-available basis. We will use reasonable endeavours to carry your Checked Baggage on the same flight as you. However, if your baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you due to operational limitations, it will be transported on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity available.
  • Additional, overweight, and oversized baggage is accepted on a standby basis. 

 

Travelling with Infants and Children

Infants

Adults accompanying infants are entitled to carry infant special items as checked baggage free of charge on Virgin Australia domestic flights, irrespective of their combined weight. These items include, but are not restricted to the following:

  • Pram/stroller
  • Portable cot
  • Car seat
  • Baby capsule

If the adult does not have a baggage allowance the above items can still be checked in free of charge. Other infant items, such as clothing and toys, form part of the adult's baggage allowance. View more information on travelling with infants

Children

Travelling with Infants and Children

Infants

Adults travelling with infants are entitled to the following checked baggage, plus one stroller, bassinet or car seat.

For Virgin Australia international long haul services:

  • To/from USA: one additional piece (maximum 23kg/50lb for Economy, and 32kg/70lb for Business and Premium Economy)
  • To/from all other destinations: one additional piece (maximum 10kg/22lb)

Adults accompanying infants are also entitled to one extra piece of carry-on baggage, weighing up to 7kg (15lb), with dimensions equal to no more than 115cm (45in).

Children

Children are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults. Adults accompanying children are entitled to carry two special equipment items, as checked baggage free of charge. These include items, but are not restricted to the following:

  • Pram/stroller
  • Portable cot
  • Car seat
  • Baby capsule

Excess Baggage Charges (At the Airport)

Virgin Australia international long haul services charge excess baggage fees for any items that exceed the free checked baggage allowance. Excess baggage fees apply each way, and are cumulative (i.e. a single item of baggage may be subject to an additional piece fee and an overweight piece fee if applicable)

Note: Any single piece of checked baggage must not exceed the maximum weight and dimensions as detailed under Oversize and Fragile Items. Any piece that exceeds these restrictions must be sent as Freight. In these circumstances we recommend that guests contact their local freight forwarder, who will be able to advise what options are available.
