The below information applies in addition to the Virgin Australia Dangerous Goods policy and applies to all guests who are travelling between Australia, Doha, Qatar and beyond on services operated by Qatar Airways on behalf of Virgin Australia and services operated by Qatar Airways
If you are carrying any of the following, there are restrictions or additional requirements when travelling to, from or through Doha.
Firearms and Ammunition (cartridges for weapons or small arms)
- Not permitted on flights to, from and through Doha, Qatar.
Batteries and battery-powered devices
All battery-powered devices carried in your checked baggage must be switched off (not in sleep or hibernation mode) and must be packaged to prevent unintentional activation and damage to the device(s).
Each spare/loose battery, including articles whose primary purpose is to provide power to another device, e.g. powerbanks/power stations/jump starter kits, must have the terminals individually protected to prevent short circuits, by placing the battery in their original retail packaging, or placing tape over the exposed terminals, or packing each battery into a separate plastic bag or protective pouch.
Spare/loose batteries must be carried in the cabin only.
All types of lithium batteries (spare, in equipment, packed with equipment) must be of a type that meets the requirements of the UN Manual of Test and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3.

Battery powered cigarette lighters
- This item is only permitted when carried on the person.
One lithium battery powered cigarette lighter, such as laser plasma lighter, tesla coil lighter, flux lighter, arc lighter or double arc lighter can be carried on the person. The lighter must be protected by a safety cap, and it must not be placed in carry-on or checked baggage.
Recharging of the lighter or battery on board the aircraft, devices without a protective safety cap or the carriage in carry-on or checked baggage is not permitted.

Drones/RPAS (Remotely-piloted aircraft system)
Drones in carry-on baggage
- You may carry drones with or without batteries in your carry-on baggage.
- Carry-on baggage size and weight limits apply.
Batteries in drones and/or spare batteries, with a watt-hour (Wh) rating exceeding 100Wh up to 160Wh, must be approved before you you transport them in your carry-on baggage.
Batteries, including spares with a watt-hour rating exceeding 160Wh are prohibited.
Drones in checked baggage
Batteries must be removed and placed in your carry-on baggage. Battery limits apply. See further information below.
Drone batteries must not be charged during your flight.
Various countries have restrictions for the carriage and use of drones. Please ensure that you refer to the local rules and regulations of your transit and destination country before travelling.

E-cigarettes (vapes)
- Permitted in carry-on baggage only
You may carry, for personal use, e-cigarettes (vapes) including e-cigars, e-pipes and other personal vaporizers containing batteries. Recharging of the equipment or the battery, or use on board the aircraft, is not permitted.
Some countries may have restrictions that could impact the carriage of electronic cigarettes. Please refer to the local rules and regulations of the origin, transit and destination countries before travelling.

Portable electronic devices (PED) – battery powered
- You may carry portable electronic devices (PED), including portable medical electronic devices (PMED), in your carry-on and checked baggage.
PED/PMED include cameras, mobile phones, laptops, tablets, hand tools, portable oxygen concentrators (POC), automated external defibrillators (AED), continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) or any equipment powered by batteries.*
*You may carry a maximum of 15 PEDs.
Your PED may contain the following types of batteries: AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt, button-sized cells, rechargeable & non-rechargeable lithium batteries, Nickel Metal Hydride (NiMH), Nickel Cadmium (NiCad) and Dry, etc.
If you pack a PED in your checked baggage, the device must be switched off. Do not place them in sleep or hibernation mode. Measures must be taken to pack the device to prevent damage and unintentional activation.

PED powered by lithium batteries
For lithium-ion (rechargeable) batteries, the watt-hour (Wh) rating must not exceed 160Wh.
For lithium metal batteries (non-rechargeable), the lithium content must not exceed 2g, except for PMEDs, which must not exceed 8g lithium content

PED powered by non-spillable batteries
The battery must not contain any free or unabsorbed liquid and be capable of withstanding vibration and pressure tests without battery liquid flowing from a ruptured or cracked case.
The voltage must be 12 volts or less and the watt-hour rating must not exceed 100 Wh.
When carried in checked baggage the device must be switched off (not in hibernation or sleep mode), have the on/off switch adequately protected against accidental activation and the device must also be protected from damage.
A maximum of two spare non-spillable batteries may be carried. Each spare battery must be protected from short circuit by insulation of the battery terminals and carried in carry-on baggage.

e.g. Underwater high-intensity lamps and soldering irons.
The heat-producing component and the battery must be separated from each other to prevent fires. This can be done through the removal of the heat-producing component, the battery, or other components such as the fuse.
Any battery that has been removed must be protected against short circuits and carried in your carry-on baggage.

Smart baggage and rideable suitcases
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight. Failure to receive pre-approval, may result in the item not travelling.
- Must be declared at check-in
- Permitted as carry-on and checked baggage
There are several restrictions on the carriage and use of smart baggage and rideable suitcases for air-transportation.
These bags often have:
- A lithium ion battery power bank used to charge PEDs such as mobile phones and laptops
- Bluetooth, radio frequency identification and Wi-Fi capability
- GPS tracking with or without GSM capability
- Electronic baggage tags
- Electronic locks
- Electric motors and steering systems
The rules for smart baggage and rideable suitcases vary based on the battery your device has.
Exceptions apply if the item is solely powered by button or coin cells, or the battery does not exceed 0.3g lithium (for lithium metal battery) or 2.7 Watt-hours (for lithium ion battery). These items will be accepted as carry-on or checked baggage if the device is able to be completely switched off (not in sleep or hibernation mode).

Vehicles powered by lithium batteries
- Not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage
You may not carry small vehicles powered by lithium batteries in your carry-on or checked baggage, even if the batteries are removed. This is applicable regardless of the watt-hour rating of the batteries.
Examples include, aero or solo wheels, self-balancing devices, including hoverboards, e-scooters, e-bikes and e-skateboards.
Specific rules apply to rideable suitcases and self-driving or self-propelling baggage. View the “Smart baggage and rideable suitcases” section on this page for more information.

Wheelchairs/Mobility Aids with lithium Batteries
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight.
- Must be declared at check-in
Lithium battery-powered wheelchairs or other similar mobility aids are permitted for passengers whose mobility is restricted by either a disability, their health or age, or a temporary mobility problem (e.g. broken leg)
The lithium battery(ies) (includes polymer, Li-Po and Li-ion) must meet the requirements of the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, subsection 38.3.
Batteries that are damaged, distorted, leaking, showing signs of corrosion, modified, not designed for the device, or identified as defective and recalled by a manufacturer are not permitted for carriage.
The mobility aid must be prepared for transport to prevent unintentional activation.
The battery terminals must be protected from short circuits, e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container.
The battery(ies) must be adequately protected against damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid.
The electrical circuits must be isolated following the manufacturer’s instructions
If the batteries are not adequately protected against damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the mobility aid, the battery(ies) must be removed following the manufacturer’s instructions.
The removed battery must have the terminals protected from short circuit.
A lithium-ion battery removed from the mobility aid must not exceed 300Wh.
One spare battery not more than 300Wh, or two spare batteries at not more than 160Wh each, are also permitted. The removed and/or spare batteries and terminals must be protected from short circuit and damage by placing each battery in a protective pouch and carried in the cabin.

Your mobility device battery(ies) must be, either:
- Non-spillable wet batteries, which comply with Special Provision A67
- Nickel-metal hydride batteries, which must comply with Special Provision A199
- Dry batteries, which must comply with Special Provision A123.
- Your wheelchair supplier must provide this information
The mobility aid must be prepared for transport to prevent unintentional activation.
The battery terminals must be protected from short circuits, e.g. by being enclosed within a battery container.
The battery(ies) must be adequately protected against damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the wheelchair or mobility aid.
The electrical circuits must be isolated following the manufacturer’s instructions
If the batteries are not adequately protected against damage by the design of the mobility aid and securely attached to the mobility aid, the battery(ies) must be removed following the manufacturer’s instructions.
A passenger may carry a maximum of:
- One spare wet, non-spillable battery meeting Special Provision A67;
- Or two spare nickel-metal hydride batteries meeting Special Provision A199
- Or two spare dry batteries meeting Special Provision A123.
The battery(ies) removed from the wheelchair/mobility aid and any spare batteries must be carried in strong, rigid packaging provided by the passenger and will be loaded in the cargo compartment
Miscellaneous items

Avalanche Rescue Backpack
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight. Failure to receive pre-approval, may result in the item not travelling.
- Must be declared at check-in
- Permitted in carry-on and checked baggage
Only one avalanche rescue backpack per person containing cartridges of compressed gas in Division 2.2 without a subsidiary hazard is permitted.
The avalanche rescue backpack may also be equipped with a pyrotechnic trigger mechanism containing not more than 200 mg net of explosives in Division 1.4S.
The backpack must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated. The air bags within the backpacks must be fitted with pressure relief valves.

Camping stoves and fuel containers that have contained a flammable liquid fuel
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight. Failure to receive pre-approval, may result in the item not travelling.
- Must be declared at check-in
- Permitted in checked baggage only
Camping stoves and fuel containers for camping stoves that contain a flammable liquid fuel may be carried provided the fuel tank of the camping stove and/or fuel container has been completely drained of all liquid fuel and action has been taken to nullify the danger.
To nullify the danger, the empty fuel tank and/or container must be allowed to drain for at least 1 hour, the fuel tank and/or container must then be left uncapped for a minimum of 6 hours to allow any residual fuel to evaporate.
The alternative method of adding cooking oil to the fuel tank and/or container to elevate the flash point of the flammable liquid and then emptying the fuel tank and/or container, is also acceptable.
The fuel tank and/or container must then have the cap securely fastened and be wrapped in an absorbent material such as paper towel and placed in a polyethylene or equivalent bag. The top of the bag must then be sealed or gathered and closed with an elastic band or twine.

Chemical Agent Monitoring Equipment
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight. Failure to receive pre-approval, may result in the item not travelling.
- Must be declared at check-in
- Permitted in carry-on or checked baggage
If you are a staff member of the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, on official travel, and you receive approval, you may carry chemical agent monitoring equipment. This includes a chemical agent monitor (CAM) and/or rapid alarm and identification device monitor (RAID-M), which do not have lithium batteries.
Please ensure that chemical agent monitoring equipment is securely packed. Instruments containing radioactive material must not exceed activity limits specified in Table 10.3.C of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations.

Disabling devices
Disabling devices such as mace, pepper spray, etc. containing an irritant or incapacitating substance and stunning devices such as Tasers, are not permitted on the person or in checked or carry-on baggage.

Dry ice (carbon dioxide, solid)
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight. Failure to receive pre-approval, may result in the item not travelling.
- Must be declared at check-in
- Permitted in carry-on and checked baggage
Carbon dioxide, solid (dry ice) in quantities not exceeding 2.5 kg per person when used to pack perishables that are not classified as dangerous goods, provided the baggage (package) permits the release of carbon dioxide gas. Each item of checked baggage containing dry ice must be marked, ‘Carbon dioxide, solid” or “Dry ice’ and with the net weight of dry ice or an indication that the net weight is 2.5 kg or less

Fuel powered Engines (New or used)
- Not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage
Internal combustion, and fuel cell engines, such as flammable liquid (e.g. petrol/diesel) and gas powered equipment such as chainsaws, whipper snippers, generators as a passenger item are not permitted in carry-on or checked baggage.

Gas cartridges, small non-flammable containing carbon dioxide (CO2) or other suitable gas in Division 2.2

A self-inflating personal safety device intended to be worn by a person such as life jackets or vest. Must be packed in such a manner that it cannot be accidentally activated.
No more than two devices per person with no more than two (2) small cartridges fitted and two (2) spare cartridges per device.
Other types of devices – e.g. bicycle tyre inflators.
Not more than four (4) cartridges up to 28g (50ml water capacity) or less in size

Medical oxygen cylinders
- You must seek pre-approval no less than 72hrs before your flight.
- Must be declared at check-in

The oxygen cylinder must not exceed 5kg gross weight.
The oxygen cylinder must be carried in an approved Air Liquide OxyCare travel pack, BOC OxyCare travel pack, BOC Carry Bag or Supagas carry bag
Guests are permitted to use medical oxygen cylinders on board, provided that a Medical Clearance Form, completed by a qualified medical practitioner, is presented at check-in.

Note: Liquid oxygen systems are forbidden for transport.
