Cairns has a tropical climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons that shape life in this tropical paradise.

The dry season, from May to October, brings sunny skies, low humidity and warm, comfortable days that are perfect for exploring the Great Barrier Reef. On the other hand, the wet season from November to April is hot and humid, with frequent afternoon showers that keep the rainforest and surrounding landscapes lush.

Cairns’ warm climate makes it the perfect destination for outdoor adventures no matter when you visit. And to help you pack and plan for your trip, we’ve broken down Cairns’ climate below by season and month, including average temperatures, rainfall, and humidity.

Cairns seasons

The wet season transforms Cairns into a lush, tropical paradise. Daytime temperatures rise to 29–31°C, with nights remaining warm at 22–24°C. Humidity sits high at 65–78% in the mornings and 60–70% in the afternoons. Rainfall is frequent, averaging 190–430mm per month, often arriving as short but heavy showers or storms in the late afternoon and evening.

On average, rainfall occurs on around 13.9 days in December, rising to 18.9 days in February and 19.3 days in March, with the wet season as a whole averaging roughly 264.05 mm of rain over six months. But while rains and tropical storms are common in the wet season, they are usually short-lived and help bring the tropical landscape to life.

While sudden tropical downpours can interrupt plans, there are still plenty of things to do – waterfalls are in full flow, the foliage is vibrant, and wildlife is active, making it a spectacular time to visit the Daintree, Barron Gorge, and Atherton Tablelands. Adventure activities are still very possible in the wet season if you plan around the afternoon showers, as early mornings often bring clear skies perfect for reef trips, river rafting, and hiking.

Cairns’ climate during the wet season ensures the sea remains warm at 28.3°C on average - perfect for swimming, reef snorkelling, and island adventures around Green and Fitzroy Islands.

If travelling to Cairns in the wet season, be aware of the cyclone season between January and March and stay updated with local forecasts.

Dry season (May to October)

The dry season in Cairns brings the region’s most comfortable and predictable weather, with warm, sunny days and lower humidity. This combination typically makes it the best time to visit Cairns.

Average daytime temperatures range from 21–25°C, while nights cool slightly to 18–21°C. Rainfall is minimal, averaging between 26 and 92mm per month, and the skies are generally clear, so you can plan reef trips or rainforest adventures with confidence.

Humidity is lower than in the wet season, typically sitting around 60–75% in the morning and dropping to 55–65% by the afternoon. This makes hiking, sightseeing, and beach walks more pleasant without the sticky tropical heat.

Cairns’ climate during the dry season is perfect for exploring natural attractions. The Great Barrier Reef offers calm, clear waters ideal for snorkelling and scuba diving, while rainforest trails in the Daintree, Mossman Gorge, and Atherton Tablelands are easy to explore.

For adventure seekers, activities such as white-water rafting on the Tully River, zip-lining, and skydiving are all popular during this season. Evenings are great for strolling along the Esplanade or enjoying sunset cruises along Trinity Inlet.
