The safety of our guests, team members, contractors and visitors is our highest priority. As a result, we actively and systematically manage safety-related risks across our business, and strive for continuous improvement in safety practices.
Virgin Australia is audited every two years against a global standard, by an accredited IATA Operations Safety Audit (IOSA) Audit Organisation.
Virgin Australia manages safety through proactive and systematic identification of risk. We control and reduce operational and occupational safety risk through our Safety Management System (SMS). The SMS continually monitors our operations to ensure they exceed Civil Aviation Safety Authority standards and international safety regulators. In addition a Safety and Operational Risk Review Committee ensures we continue to maintain the highest standards.
Health and safety performance is monitored and reported across a range of occupational health and safety indicators, including all injury rates, lost time injuries and work hours lost. Targets are set on an annual basis to ensure we progress on a journey towards a zero harm environment. In Financial Year 2011 our Lost Time Injury Frequency Rate (LTIFR), measured as the number of lost time injuries per million hours worked (resulting in the loss of at least one full shift), reduced by 7.5 per cent to 17.06.
We are focussed on three main areas: safety leadership, staff training and incident management. This three-tiered program is designed to drive safety performance changes at all levels of the business.
Our management of security risks and potential threats is underpinned by our Transport Security Program, which is formally reviewed every five years and subject to external and internal audits. We work with government agencies, regulators and airport operators in Australia and overseas to ensure we comply with all regulations, and produce the securest operations possible.
A recent uplift ban has been issued by PNG for any foreign media personnel intending to enter PNG for journalism/media purposes to Manus Island.
