Virgin Australia may vary its published additional baggage fees at any time. The applicable baggage fee will be the price published to you at the time you purchase additional baggage.

Prices are per piece of baggage and per sector and may vary based on your travel dates. Peak season pricing for checked baggage applies for travel during peak travel and high-traffic periods (including school holidays and peak summer travel season).*

Prices are in the applicable booking currency, being the country of origin specified in your booking or purchase.

If you choose to change your booking from a direct flight to multiple connecting flights, you will need to pay an additional baggage fee for each additional sector (if applicable).

*Peak season pricing for checked baggage applies to those travelling on the following dates:

  • 12 December 2025 – 27 January 2026

  • 03 April 2026 – 19 April 2026

  • 27 June 2026 – 19 July 2026

  • 19 September 2026 – 11 October 2026

  • 12 December 2026 – 27 January 2027

Off-peak pricing applies to all other travel dates.

If you voluntarily change your flight from an off-peak travel date to a peak travel date, peak season pricing will apply to any new additional baggage purchased. If you are travelling on an off-peak date and your flight is moved to a peak travel date by us, you may contact the Guest Contact Centre to purchase any new additional baggage at off-peak pricing.

International flights

  • These baggage fees only apply when travelling on Virgin Australia-operated flights.
  • When travelling on a flight operated by a partner airline, please visit "Travelling with airline partners" which details your baggage allowance and excess baggage fees.

International baggage fees

If you change your mind and choose to cancel your flight, fees will not be refunded unless you are entitled to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law.

At the airport

Additional baggage can be selected and purchased via self-service Kiosks or via an Agent at the Check-In counter. Higher baggage rates will apply at the airport.

Pre-purchased baggage may only be purchased if you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ticketed and operated flight. For tickets or connecting flights operated by other airlines additional baggage may only be purchased at the airport on the day of departure.

Overweight baggage fees

If your bag tips the scales over 23kg (up to 32kg), an overweight fee applies at the airport.

Anything heavier than 32kg? That’s a job for our Cargo team.

Fees are charged on the day of departure for each extra piece, per one-way journey (including formal connecting flights). As listed below:

Domestic flights

  • Overweight baggage fee: $65 per piece
  • Applies to each piece of baggage weighing over 23kg (max 32kg)

International short haul flights

Overweight baggage fee per piece (23kg to 32kg):

  • Departing New ZealandNZD 110

These rates apply to Virgin Australia-operated flights only. Flying with a partner airline? View airline partners checked baggage inclusions.

Oversized baggage

You can check in wheelchairs, mobility aids, sporting equipment, bikes, surfboards and more, as long as each item stays within your baggage weight allowance. If it’s heavier, an overweight baggage fee will apply.

Wheelchair/mobility aids are always carried free of charge when they’re for personal use by a guest booked to travel with us.

For oversized items like surfboards or bikes, make sure they’re packed securely and meet our size and weight guidelines.
