Brachycephalic breeds
While we love welcoming our brachycephalic breeds, there are specific welfare factors that need to be considered when travelling. Their anatomy can make it harder for them to breathe and stay cool, especially when they’re stressed.
Due to this, you must book Brachycephalic animals on one of our Brachycephalic approved commercial pet or animal transport companies – they' re experts in the special transport requirements for these vulnerable breeds and will be happy to help with your travel arrangements (unfortunately direct bookings cannot be accepted with Virgin Australia Cargo).
You’ll also need a registered vet to check your animal and complete a special Brachycephalic Veterinary Assessment Form to confirm they’re fit to fly safely (this includes cross breeds with the below animals).
The list of brachycephalic breeds includes, but are not limited to:
Dog breeds
- Affenpinscher
- American Bully
- American Bulldog
- Australian Bulldog
- Boston Terrier
- Boxer
- Brussels Griffon / Griffon Bruxellois

If you’re travelling with birds
- Limits are in accordance with the International Air Transport Association (IATA) Live Animal Regulations (LARs). See their website for further requirements.
-
Exotic animals
If you’re sending non-domesticated animals, zoo animals, sea animals, endangered species or animals requiring a licence or permit, you or your commercial pet transport company will need to submit an exotic and special animal request form before booking.
Pre-departure
Follow the steps below to make sure you and your pet are ready for travel.
Check in with your vet
The risks of air travel can be higher for some animals because of changes in altitude, pressure in the cabin and changes in temperature. Before their adventure, we recommend chatting with your vet to make sure your animal’s health is in good order.
Veterinary certificate
A veterinary certificate may be required in certain circumstances. This is an official health clearance from a registered vet confirming your animal is ready to fly. It must be issued within 14 days of your flight.
You will be required to present a copy to Virgin Australia Cargo when dropping off your animal at the cargo shed, if one of the following conditions apply to your animal:
- Has a medical condition or is unwell.
- Is between 8 and 12 weeks of age (only applicable to cats and dogs)
- Is a brachycephalic (snub nosed) breed (Download the Brachycephalic Veterinary assessment form)
- Is over 12 years old (only applicable to cats and dogs)
- Is pregnant or given birth less than 48 hours before travel
- Needs to be sedated on the recommendation of your vet
You can also ask your vet about:
- Preparing your animal for travel
- Medication appropriate for the duration of travel, including possible delays
- Options for veterinary care (if required) at your destination
Find the right animal container
Your animal must be presented in an approved container, compliant with Virgin Australia and IATA requirements to ensure their welfare.
If your animal’s travel container doesn't meet our requirements, we may refuse to accept your animal for transport.
If you are securing your own container, we recommend sizing up your animal in accordance with the instructions on the IATA regulations website.
- Your animal must be able to stand, turn around and move unrestricted inside the container
- Your animal must not exceed the maximum rated animal weight for the container (if supplied).
- Your container must be well ventilated, escape proof and durable^
- Be compliant with the fleet compatibility section below.
^Note: Powerful and strong animals which can break through plastic are required to travel in a metal or wooden container as set out in the IATA regulations (i.e. CR-82 crate).
Transporting birds
For the transportation of birds, the container must meet the IATA LAR regulations.

Please ensure you securely attach any required paperwork or evidence to the top of the animal container, prior to lodging your animal (clear tape is recommended).

Tracking and pick up
When your pet or animal lands
You can collect your animal 30 minutes after the aircraft’s arrival time at the respective cargo collection point. See our pick up locations for more information.
You’ll need your Air Waybill (AWB) number and photo ID to collect your animal. If you are running late to collect them, please contact your local cargo facility in advance. Animals that are not collected within 90 minutes of arrival may be handed over to an animal transport specialist at your expense.
Your pet will be very excited to see you, so we recommend that you open their container with caution, quickly clipping their lead on or securing them as needed.

Forms
Below is a summary of the forms listed on this page.
General FAQs
-
What is it like for my pet or animal to travel in the Cargo hold?
We try to maintain the temperature in the cargo hold to be consistent to the temperature experienced in the passenger cabin. To maximise your pet or animal’s comfort, the lighting in cargo will also be dimly lit.
It is important to remember that your pet or animal maybe exposed to high levels of airport operation noise whilst waiting to be loaded into the aircraft hold.
-
What happens if my animal soils the crate?
Accidents happen. To avoid them, we recommend not feeding your pet or animal for at least eight hours before travel. It’s also important to give them lots of time to go to the toilet before travelling.
If your pet or animal soils the crate before boarding, they will not be loaded onto the aircraft. For safety reasons, our airline staff and contractors are not permitted to take animals out of their container. In these situations, we may require you (if you booked directly with Virgin Australia Cargo) or your commercial animal transport company to clean the container before re-accepting your pet or animal for departure.
In the event this cannot happen in time, we may call out a commercial animal transport company on your behalf to clean the crate. This may be charged back as an additional amount.
-
What happens to my pet or animal during a disruption?
Our priority is to safely and securely transport your animal from point A to B.
However, due to the complex environment surrounding airport operations, unforeseen disruptions can happen. If they do, your animal will be moved to a shaded, well-ventilated area and frequently monitored by our team.
If the delay exceeds 2 hours or if we are unable to place your animal on another service on the same day (including, but not limited to cancellations and or missed connecting flights), our team will contact you to organise alternative travel options.
-
Can I sedate my animal for travel?
Sedation is not recommended, however, if your vet does recommend sedation, your animal must travel with a valid veterinary certificate and travels at the owner's risk. If your vet doesn’t recommend sedation, they’ll be able to advise you on other ways to manage stress. For further information on why sedation is not recommended refer to the IATA site; IATA - Traveler's Pet Corner.
-
What if I have additional questions?
If you have any questions, get in touch with your animal transport specialist.
If you booked directly, reach out to our friendly Virgin Australia Cargo team.
