Munich Attractions

Munich Residenz

A former palace, Munich Residenz once served as the home to Bavarian dukes, electors and kings. The largest city palace in Germany, it consists of ten courtyards and 130 rooms spread across three main buildings. Its biggest drawcards are the barrel-vaulted Hall of Antiquities, which features 17th century ceiling frescoes, and the famous Hofgarten with its Temple of Diana centrepiece.

Deutsches Museum

With a 28,000-object exhibit spanning five fields and demonstrations of everything from flight simulation to glass blowing, this museum of technological discoveries is sure to amaze even the least science-savvy visitors.

BMW Museum

The distinctive BMW Museum chronicles the company's journey from aircraft engine manufacturer to luxury carmaker. A collection of car models are on display, from pre-war to futuristic, but it's Elvis Presley's restored 507 that attracts the most attention from car enthusiasts.

Nymphenburg Palace

This baroque palace was built in 1675 for the prince-electoral couple Ferdinand Maria and Henriette Adelaide of Savoy. Nymphenburg Palace features sprawling gardens and two wings of lavishly decorated rooms, the most famous being King Ludwig I's portrait gallery of society beauties.

Marienplatz

The heartbeat of Munich, the central square of Marienplatz is a popular meeting spot for locals and tourists alike. Dotted with shops and restaurants, it's also a short stroll to some of the city's most popular attractions. Among the highlights are the New Town Hall, the Rathaus-Glockenspiel, and the 14th century Old Town Hall.

Munich Beer Halls

Home of Oktoberfest, the Bavarian capital boasts plenty of venues in which to sample a stein all year-round. Thirsty travellers from around the globe flock to Hofbräuhaus known for its ornate interiors and live folk music shows. Established in 1589 by the Bavarian royal family, it, along with night-time favourite, Löwenbräukeller, is one of the most celebrated beer halls in the world.

Munich Restaurants

From beer hall restaurants to daily food markets, Munich is a mecca for diners.

Located in the central pedestrian precinct is the unassuming Augustiner-Grossgaststätte, where plates of braised beef and dumplings can be enjoyed in a traditional hall or fresco-flanked courtyard. Looking for the perfect spot for a sunny day? Pack a picnic and head to Chinesischer Turm, a Chinese pagoda located in Munich's largest park, Englischer Garten. Just after a quick nibble? In the heart of the Altstadt is Viktualienmarkt, a daily food and produce market and a great way to sample the local specialities.

Munich Shopping

When it comes to shopping, Munich doesn't disappoint. One of the busiest shopping areas in the city is the Stachus, home to a range of department stores and mid-range retailers. Turn the corner and stroll down Theatinerstrasse to spend up a storm at high-end retailers, or people watch from one of the many pavement cafes.

Alongside its upmarket boutiques, this famous street is also home to Fünf Höfe shopping centre, which boasts fantastic displays of modern art and architecture. Looking for souvenirs to remember your trip by? Pick up affordable lederhosen and dirndls at Steindl Trachten, while Hofbräuhaus beer hall offers a diverse range of commemorative steins at its gift shop.

Munich Transport

On touchdown at Munich Airport, there are plenty of transport options to get you on your way. Both the S-Bahn train and airport buses take approximately 45 minutes to reach the centre of Munich. For a more convenient route direct to your accommodation, hop in a metered taxi or hire a car at the airport terminal once your flight to Munich has touched down. Getting around and beyond Munich is simple, with a variety of reliable public transport options, including underground, suburban and regional trains, as well as tram and bus services. Meanwhile, Munich's prime location makes for an easy day trip to the fairytale-esque Neuschwanstein Castle or a longer trip to neighbouring Austria.
