What are Tasmania’s top attractions?

There is so much to see and do in the Apple Isle. Make sure to read our comprehensive guide on the best places to visit in Tasmania, but here are some ideas to get you started!

Cradle Mountain

Cradle Mountain is one of Tasmania’s icons, and one of the most visited natural attractions. A location and a mountain, it’s situated at the northern end of the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park. Part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area, Cradle Mountain is the rugged jewel of the park, the surrounding landscape diverse with grassland, rainforest, and ancient plants. It’s also rich in wildlife, home to echidna, platypus, and Tasmanian devils, plus several bird species. Accessible by road as a day trip from Launceston, it’s also popular as a walking holiday, where you’ll discover spectacular scenery, plenty of opportunities to spot local wildlife, magnificent walking trails and views - and even a Film Festival is held in Cradle Mountain in early April.

Bay of Fires

Named by Lonely Planet as the ‘world’s hottest destination’, the Bay of Fires, sitting on the north-eastern coast, is a 3-hour drive from Launceston, or 4 hours from Hobart. Home to the most beautiful beaches in the world along a 50-kilometre coastline stretch from Binnalong Bay in the south, to Eddystone Point in the north - the southern end is a dedicated conservation area, whilst the northern section is part of Mount William National Park where you can tramp and camp. The Bay’s iconic name coming from Captain Tobias Furneaux as he sailed past in 1773, spotting aboriginal fires lighting up the coastline, the Bay of Fires is a spectacular place to soak up the sensational views and experience a walk along the beach.

Freycinet National Park

Home to Tasmania’s most photographed view, an accessible 2.5-hour drive from both Hobart and Launceston, Freycinet National Park offers a pristine coastal environment to explore. A host of activities including short walks, and longer ones such as the popular walk to the pass overlooking Wineglass Bay; wildlife spotting (Freycinet is home to 49 species that can only be found in Tasmania!), bird spotting, and incredible flora and fauna – showcasing more than 500 plants including over 80 species of orchids. There are also water sports galore – swim, snorkel, kayak, or dive in the clear waters to get up close to the abundant marine life.

Bruny Island

Located on the south-eastern coast of Tasmania, an easy 1-hour drive from Hobart with the only access by ferry, Bruny Island is home to incredible landscapes, diverse wildlife, and its renowned food. A few must-dos are a hike up to Cape Bruny Lighthouse, take a Bruny Island Cruise - or a nature tour of the island, join a food and wine guided tour, and soak up the local creativity at the art gallery at Dennes Point. A wildlife lovers haven - between September and February sight the smallest penguins in the world (weighing in at only 1kg), the white wallabies, and for bird lovers Bruny Island is home to the world’s largest population of the endangered Forty-spotted Pardalote.

Hobart

Hobart – a booming historic port city offering a flourishing art scene, nature at its best with the beaches and mountains alongside, and spectacular produce creating an evolving food and wine tourism. Hobart also lights up on the events calendar, with summer festivals including MONA FOMA and Tasmanian Wine Festival, plus in winter showcasing Festival of Voices, Dark MOFO, and Hobart’s Winter Fest. Hobart is also home to Australia’s oldest brewery, Cascade Brewery; and a drive distance away from most amazing attractions in Tasmania including Richmond, Huon Valley, Bruny Island and the D’Entrecasteaux Channel, Mt Field National Park, and Port Arthur.
