Things do to in Broome

Broome is home to one of Australia’s most unique and striking landscapes. Situated in the secluded north west of Western Australia, the quaint pearling town is flanked by endless cobalt blue seas, white sand beaches, red ochre cliffs and rust orange earth. As the southern gateway to the Kimberley, Broome witnesses the desert meet the sea with remarkable ancient history and breathtaking natural wonder.

Visit close to the full moon (from March to October) to witness the region’s most spectacular natural wonder, the Staircase to the Moon – a long shimmery staircase that ascends from the mudflats into the sky. Australia is no stranger to beautiful beaches, but Broome’s Cable Beach ranks among the best of the best, stretching for 22 kilometres with pristine white sand and calm blue water. Just when it seemed that Broome’s coastline couldn’t get any more impressive, Gantheaume Point reveals a 130 million years old treasure, 30-metre long Sauropod dinosaur footprints. The beauty of the region isn’t just restricted to the coast... one of the remotest, wildest and most beautiful expanses on earth, the Kimberley waits just hours away – a region quintessentially Australian, home to rugged terrain and spectacular wildlife.

The retail scene in Broome has come a long way from the days when pearl merchants hawked their rough treasures on the street corners. Now pearl showrooms thrive, clothing shops sell designer wares, and galleries highlight the best of the region’s art and culture. Thanks to Broome's unpolluted waters, South Sea pearls are among the most desirable in the world. At least 12 pearl showrooms line the streets of Chinatown, selling keepsakes at a range of price points. Chinatown is also Broome’s retail hub, hosting shopping hotspots like Carnarvon Street, Short Street and Paspaley Plaza. As the southern gateway to the Kimberley, Broome is a great place to shop for indigenous art. A number of galleries sell art by local Aboriginal painters, along with photography, carvings, didgeridoos and music. More local arts, as well as crafts, incense, candles and hemp clothes can be found at the Courthouse Markets or the Town Beach Markets.

Broome’s population is spoilt for culinary choice, with more than 50 menus on offer in the region – touching on everything including Indigenous, Mediterranean, Asian and Modern Australian fares. Local specialities abound with fresh seafood and local produce a plenty. Indigenous delicacies, such as pearl meat and barramundi, are served up at resort restaurants. Extensive local seafood selections are offers amid alfresco surrounds. While those with an adventurous palate can taste native meats such as crocodile, kangaroo and camel at a number of local eateries. Broome’s status as a pearling outpost has seen the town attract a strong Japanese and Chinese connection, and in turn a dining culture with a notable Asian influence.

Though small, Broome has an exciting and vibrant nightlife. Attracting everybody from honeymooners to backpackers, and families to adventure seekers, the town swells with nightlife opportunities to indulge all walks of life. Dotted with cocktail bars, country pubs, live gig halls and alfresco cafes, Broome is a great setting in which to take in and enjoy north Western Australia’s relaxed and tropical atmosphere. Located on the main street, The Roebuck Bay Hotel is a particularly lively local hotspot, known for attracting national and international artists.
