The Virgin Australia Group continues to monitor passenger demand and has made further adjustments to its flying schedule. Demand for travel has continued to decline with border restrictions and the need for people to stay home due to social distancing measures. 

The Group will continue to operate a service between Melbourne and Sydney daily, except Saturday, but will temporarily suspend other passenger flying from Friday 10 April 2020 while restrictions remain in place.

We continue to support the Australian Government with flights between Los Angeles and Hong Kong to help bring Australians home and maintain important freight links in and out of the country. 

Virgin Australia guests impacted by these changes can visit or phone the Guest Contact Centre for their options. 

Supporting Australians to return home

As a major Australian carrier we are pleased to support the Government in getting Australians home and maintaining important freight links into the country. For a limited period, we will be operating one return flight per week between Los Angeles and Brisbane, and two return flights per week between Hong Kong and Brisbane. These flights can be purchased through our website.

* Seats are limited and may not be available on all flights. All fares booked on this flight will be an Economy Freedom fare. There is no premium cabin availability on these flights, and no upgrades will be permitted. You will be provided with a meal. All Virgin Australia and partner lounges are currently closed. A checked baggage allowance of 2 pieces (weighing up to 23kg each) is included in your fare. Price is inclusive of all taxes and charges, but may vary due to currency fluctuations. Domestic travel restrictions

We recommend all passengers travelling to check the latest information and advice on the relevant Government websites. The Australian Government information is available at the Border Force websiteDepartment of Health website and Smartraveller.


  • The Australian Government has announced that all incoming passengers to Australia will be required to self-isolate in government-approved facilities such as hotels for 14 days before returning to their home or residence. Passengers will self-isolate in a government-approved facility in the destination or port where they disembarked their international flight. Passengers will not be allowed to transit on a domestic flight to reach their home state until they have completed their period of self-isolation upon arrival. This applies to all passengers arriving in Australia from 11:59pm on March 28, and will be managed by the State or Territory of the port in which you land.   • The Australian Government has announced a travel ban prohibiting Australian citizens and permanent residents from travelling overseas from 12.00pm AEDST Wednesday 25 March 2020.

  • The Australian Government has announced a travel ban prohibiting entry into Australia for non-Australian citizens and non-permanent residents from 9:00pm AEDT on Friday 20 March 2020. This applies to passengers who have boarded a flight inbound to Australia after 9:00pm AEDT on this day.

  • Both of the above measures are indefinite, and you can find more information, including a list of exemptions, on the Smartraveller and Border Force websites.


  • The Queensland Government has announced that it will be closing its borders from midnight, 25 March 2020

  • Any guest permitted entry via an exemption will be required to complete an incoming passenger card upon arrival clearly stating the reason for their travel

  • More information is available on the Queensland Department of Health website.


  • The Tasmanian Government has announced new travel restrictions, requiring all non-essential travellers to self-isolate for 14 days upon entry into Tasmania. This applies to passengers arriving into Tasmania after midnight on Friday 20 March 2020.

  • Guests will also be required to complete an incoming passenger card upon arrival clearly stating the reason for their travel.

Western Australia

  • From 11.59pm (local time) on Sunday 5 April, the Western Australia Government will temporarily close its interstate borders. From this time, passengers will not be permitted to enter Western Australia without an exemption. 

  • Please note, people arriving from interstate to Western Australia prior to 11.59pm on Sunday 5 April, are still required to complete an incoming passenger card upon arrival clearly stating the reason for their travel and are still required to self-isolate for 14 days. 

  • Stronger restrictions have also been imposed for the Kimberley region which restricts travel between the four local government areas comprised within the Kimberley region.

  • Anyne who thinks they meet the criteria outlined in the Quarantine (Closing the Border) Directions may apply for an exemption. All exempt travellers must complete an Exemption Application Form prior to travel and submit it by emailing the form to

  • Exemptions must be granted by WA Police prior to travel, and you must carry your exemption form and proof of its submission when travelling.

Northern Territory

  • From 4:00pm (local time) on Tuesday, 24 March, interstate arrivals into the Northern Territory will be required to self-isolate for 14 days.

  • Any guest permitted entry via an exemption will be required to complete an incoming passenger card upon arrival clearly stating the reason for their travel

  • More information can be found on the Northern Territory Government website.

South Australia

  • From 4:00pm (local time) on Tuesday, 24 March, South Australia will close its borders.

  • Any guest permitted entry via an exemption will be required to complete an incoming passenger card upon arrival clearly stating the reason for their travel

  • Interstate arrivals into South Australia will be required to self-isolate for 14 days. More information can be found on the South Australian Department of Health website

New Zealand

  • The New Zealand Government has announced further travel restrictions which will apply from 11.59pm NZST on Thursday 19 March 2020.

  • These restrictions prohibit entry into New Zealand for all non-New Zealand citizens and permanent residents.

  • However, Australia and New Zealand have reached a bilateral agreement allowing their nationals to transit through each country in order to get home. This means that if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident returning to Australia, you will be permitted to transit through New Zealand, and if you are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident returning to New Zealand, you will be permitted to transit through Australia.

  • The New Zealand border will be shut to all other overseas travellers boarding an aircraft that departs for travel to New Zealand from 11.59pm on Thursday 19 March.

  • All travellers to New Zealand are still required to self-isolate for 14 days on arrival.

  • Virgin Australia currently plans to operate all flights to and from New Zealand until 22 March 2020 and expect to then reduce services.

Hamilton Island

  • Hamilton Island will not be open for visitors from 23 March onwards.

  • The Hamilton Island Airport will remain open to accept all services which are currently scheduled.

  • There are currently no changes to Virgin Australia’s Hamilton island services, however these are under review.  

Indian Ocean Territories (IOT)

  • A state of emergency has been declared in the Indian Ocean Territories (IOT) of Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands and a travel ban has been implemented to stop non-residents travelling to the territories.

  • Effective immediately, if you are travelling to Christmas Island or Cocos (Keeling) Islands and are not a resident, you will not be permitted to travel and on arrival will be turned back to your departure port.

  • Non-resident personnel required to travel to the territories to provide an essential service in the IOT will be required to seek permission by the Administrator of Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the relevant Territory Controller, prior to making a booking.   • The Fijian Government has announced a travel ban prohibiting entry into Fiji from 00:01 (local time) on Thursday 26 March 2020. This applies to all passengers (including Fijian citizens and residents) who are scheduled to fly into or out of Fiji after this time.

Solomon Islands

  • Effective immediately, all non-citizens are not permitted to enter Solomon Islands

  • Any citizens or residents who have travelled to any country that has reported COVID- 19 cases will be permitted to enter; however will need to self-isolate for 14 days.


  • The Indonesian Government will implement additional border control measures from 20 March 2020.

  • Foreigners (non-Indonesian citizens) travelling to Bali (Denpasar) from 20 March 2020 will be required to obtain an entry visa from the Indonesian Consulate, prior to travel. When applying for a visa, guests must provide documented medical clearance issued by an authorised doctor.

  • All mandatory documentation (medical clearance and visa) must be sighted by Virgin Australia staff at the airport, prior to the issuing of a boarding pass. Guests who fail to provide the documentation will be denied travel. More information:


  • The Singaporean Government has announced new measures prohibiting all short-term visitors from transiting through Singapore (SIN), effective from 11:59pm Monday 23 March.

United Arab Emirates

  • The United Arab Emirates has announced it is suspending all passenger flights and the transit of passengers in the country for two weeks from 25 March 2020 to stop the spread of  COVID-19.

Etihad Airways

  • Etihad Airways has announced that from 11:59pm (UAE local time) on Wednesday, 25 March, all services to, from and via the UAE will be temporarily suspended.

Urgent travel advice - international connections

Following the recent announcements from the Singapore and UAE authorities regarding the ban for transit passengers through Singapore and Abu Dhabi, as well as the ongoing worldwide airline cancellations and border closures related to COVID-19, passengers travelling on a Virgin Australia operated sector connecting onto a service operated by one of our codeshare or interline partners may be denied boarding due to the cancellation of the onwardsector by our partner airlines. In addition, in light of the increasing number of travel restrictions being implemented by foreign governments, passengers may also be denied entry to their final destination or passengers may be unable to transit. 

We recommend that Virgin Australia guests with connections through these hubs, as well as any international connections, do not commence their travel unless all flight, entry and transit requirements can be met. 

In order to avoid any passenger mishandling or issues at the transit port, we strongly recommend that prior to arriving at the airport for their Virgin Australia flight, ALL onward services from Australia are confirmed directly with the operating carrier, and all entry/transit requirements can be met. TIMATIC systems have been updated to reflect all known current entry and transit restrictions.

Virgin Australia Schedule Changes 

We've announced a temporary suspension of the majority of our international services and further cuts to our domestic network until 14 June 2020 in response to expanded government travel restrictions and increased impacts from COVID-19 on travel demand. Guests who have booked flights on a suspended service will be contacted via email, prioritised by departure date, with alternative travel options.

We will work closely with the Government to prioritise bringing Australians home and returning visitors back to their point of origin safely. Impacted passengers will be contacted directly by us over the next 14 days via email. Please ensure your email address is up-to-date in ‘Manage My Booking’ on our website.

Please only contact us via our Guest Contact Centre if your booking is within the next 48 hours due to extremely high call volumes.

We're doing everything we can to assist you as quickly as possible and we appreciate your patience. If you have booked through a travel agent please liaise with them directly.

Lounge changes

Virgin Australia-operated Domestic Lounges

Following the implementation of new social distancing laws and regulations imposed on licenced premises amid COVID-19, the Virgin Australia domestic lounge network will be temporarily closed until further notice.

Given the current circumstances, we are unable to confirm a date the lounges will reopen, however we are continuing to monitor the situation closely.

International Lounges

The following international lounges, operated by our partners, have announced they will be closed until further notice:

  • Los Angeles Airport (LAX)

Changes to our onboard domestic Food and Beverage offering

As a result of COVID-19 and reduced travel demand, guests travelling on Virgin Australia domestic flights will receive a more simplified onboard offer.

Guests will receive a snack and complimentary water during this interim period.

Coronavirus cases onboard

The safety of our passengers and crew is always our number one priority. We understand some guests may be concerned about recent flights where a passenger has been confirmed to have coronavirus. We are working closely with the relevant health departments to notify any guest who may be considered at risk of contracting the virus. Please note, these guests will be contacted directly by the health department who will provide further information.

Please be assured that the risk of transmission in Australia remains low and if you’re not contacted it means you are not considered to be at risk.
