Polynesian Blue Commissions Unique Tatau (Tattoo) Design For Samoa Ad Campaigns


Polynesian Blue today unveiled a specially commissioned Samoan tatau (tattoo) design which it will use in its marketing campaigns in Samoa.

The original artwork was officially handed over to the airline today by Auckland artist, Tulouena Tuifa’asisina (Tui), at a ceremony at the Polynesian Blue office in Manukau, Auckland.

The new tatau has been designed to tell the story of its current advertising message of “Travel Happy”.

Virgin Blue marketing manager, Darren Wright, said previously the airline had incorporated the Samoan flag into its branded advertising and it was looking for a fresh visual approach to its local promotions.

“Polynesian Airlines is a unique part of the Virgin Blue Group and a true partnership between Virgin Blue and the Government of Samoa and its people.

“We were looking for a way to further communicate our commitment to Samoa and commissioning a traditional artwork is a great way to do this.”

Mr Wright said the tatau design is a “true work of art” and will be used for both outdoor and press advertising.

“We have the ability to use the design across all our visual branding in Samoa, and one of the first places that the people of Samoa will see the design is on our high-profile billboard on Vaea Street in Apia.”

Polynesian Blue Airlines was launched in 2005 as a joint venture between Virgin Blue and the Government of Samoa and operates 10 flights a week between Auckland and Apia and 6 flights a week between Sydney and Apia.

The airline, which recorded a pre-tax profit of NZD $3.62 million for the six months ended 31 December 2006, has been credited with helping boost tourism to Samoa from New Zealand and Australia since its launch.
