Virgin Blue To Launch Direct Daily Flights Between Newcastle And The Gold Coast

Virgin Blue has announced it will begin direct flights between Newcastle and the Gold Coast from November 24 in response to strong lobbying from the Hunter business and tourism communities.

It follows on from the success of the low fare airline’s existing non-stop flights between Newcastle and Brisbane and Melbourne. Virgin Blue will be the only airline operating a direct jet service between Newcastle and the world famous Gold Coast region.

Spokesperson Amanda Bolger said, “The people of Newcastle have made it very clear this is a service they want and after re-jigging our network schedule, we have freed up an aircraft to commit to this new route.”

She continued, “We’ve had tremendous support from this region since we introduced our 737 jet service and we are keen to expand the number of routes we offer from Newcastle in line with ongoing demand.”

A special launch fare offer of $49* one-way on the net is on sale from now until 3 October 2004, for travel between 24 November and 16 December 2004.

The flight will depart Newcastle mid morning arriving on the Gold Coast in time to hit Surfers Paradise for lunch and a swim or shop. The return flight leaves the Gold Coast at lunchtime, landing back in Newcastle at 1.15pm.

Amanda Bolger added, “This is a terrific trifecta in terms of three daily flights to three different destinations out of Newcastle airport, all within the space of a year and while it will be great for those living in the Hunter and surrounding regions, it will also be a winner for Gold Coast locals wanting to head to the Hunter for some wining, dining or whale watching.”

Virgin Blue has identified a substantial number of people from the Gold Coast who have driven to Brisbane to take advantage of the low fares to Newcastle and is confident the new direct service will not only make it more affordable but also more convenient.

Virgin Blue has been working closely with local council, airport, business and tourism authorities who have been pro-active and enthusiastic in ensuring the region throws its support behind the airline’s low fare jet service.
