Adults and children travelling on our Domestic network are allocated a checked baggage allowance, as detailed below.

Each piece of baggage has a maximum total linear dimension (length + width + height) of 140cm (55in).

For Travellers with Infants and Children

Infants

Adults accompanying infants are entitled to carry up to 3 infant special items as checked baggage free of charge on Virgin Australia flights. Each item must not exceed 23kg. These items include, but are not restricted to the following:

Children are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults. Adults accompanying children are entitled to carry two special equipment items, as checked baggage free of charge. These include items, but are not restricted to the following:

Additional Baggage

In addition to your fare’s baggage allowance, you can add a maximum of two pieces of baggage at 23kg each per person before you arrive at the airport.

How to purchase Additional Baggage

Online:

If you’d like to purchase additional baggage to an existing booking, go to Manage your Booking.

At the Airport:

Additional baggage can be selected and purchased via self-service Kiosks or via an Agent at the Check-In counter. Higher baggage rates will apply at the airport.

Additional Baggage Fees

Baggage fees are charged for each additional piece, per one-way journey and are subject to change at any time without notice. Pre-purchased baggage may only be purchased if you are travelling on a Virgin Australia ticketed and operated flight. For tickets or connecting flights operated by other airlines, additional baggage may only be purchased at the airport on the day of departure.

An additional two bags may be purchased online or via the Guest Contact Centre. If you need more than two additional bags, you may purchase up to 9 bags at the airport, subject to availability.

Overweight Baggage

If you’re travelling Economy or Premium Economy with a little extra weight, fees will apply at the airport to any piece of fare inclusive or pre-purchased baggage over 23kg.

Overweight Baggage Fees

Fees are charged at the airport on the day of departure for each additional piece, per one-way journey (includes formal connecting flights) as listed below.

An Overweight Baggage fee of $45 will apply to each piece of baggage weighing over 23kg.

Important Information about Additional Baggage

Each guest may check in up to 9 pieces on Virgin Australia operated flights. The 9 pieces includes fare allowance, Velocity tier allowance, pre-purchased baggage and additional airport baggage.

REFUNDS

Additional baggage fees will only be refunded if we cancel the flight or you are entitled to a refund of your fare or your baggage fees under the fare rules and/or the Australian Consumer Law. If you cancel your flight, you may be entitled to a refund in accordance with the fare rules. These are in addition to your rights under the Australian Consumer Law.
