Virgin Blue Launches Melbourne â Coffs Coast Direct Flights06/11/2004
Virgin Blue will today launch a brand new service between Melbourne and Coffs Harbour on NSW’s Coffs Coast as part of its on-going plan to expand its direct low fare network across Australia.
The airline will launch its weekly direct flight in response to strong connecting bookings as well as ongoing demand from locals who want to travel between the two key cities, be it for business or leisure.
Today’s flight will depart Melbourne at 3.00pm and land in Coffs Harbour at 4.50pm heralding the second direct flight in and out of Coffs to compliment the existing daily direct flights to and from Sydney.
Virgin Blue will be the first airline in 15 years to operate a convenient non-stop Coffs - Melbourne flight in line with its hub-busting strategy to get people directly where they want to go.
Virgin Blue spokesperson Amanda Bolger said, “We’ve been noticing that a large number of people have been taking advantage of our connecting services to fly between the two cities and when there is demand like that, it makes sense to offer a direct option between Coffs Coast and the Victorian capital.”
She continued, “While it’s early days, forward bookings are trending well and we are excited to be venturing in to more domestic routes and helping nurture increased tourism opportunities for Coffs Coast.”
The majority of flyers are expected to be travelling for pleasure to enjoy the delights of both destinations: Coffs Coast for its fantastic beaches, golfing and outdoor activities and Melbourne for its culture, culinary delights and shopping. It will also be convenient for the conference market with the Saturday direct flight and daily connecting flights.
Amanda Bolger continued, “There has been strong lobbying from our Guests as well as the tourism and business communities for Virgin Blue to begin services between Coffs Harbour and Melbourne and we have always been adamant that we will support the regions that support us. We will keep an eye on demand and if we fill the seats, we will obviously look at adding more flights in the future.”
She added, “We pride ourselves on maintaining affordable fares while at the same time providing a high class service and we firmly believe that regional centres are great supporters of jet aircraft as it allows them to get to their destination quickly and in comfort”, Amanda Bolger finished.
The weekly Saturday direct flight will depart Melbourne at 3.00pm and arrive in Coffs Harbour at 4.50pm before turning around and departing at 5.20pm and landing back in Melbourne at 7.25pm. Daily connecting flights will also be available via Sydney with both direct and connecting fares starting from $149* one way on the net.
* All fares are for flights booked on the Internet. $10 more by phone. Fares are subject to availability and may not be available on all flights or peak days.
