Our Fleet

Our diverse fleet consists of narrow and wide-body aircraft to provide you with the opportunity to increase your skills and grow your career. You will also have the opportunity to experience a range of different flying into interesting and challenging destinations, such as the regional, short haul international and long haul international route network.
Our fleet comprises of the following aircraft types:

  • Boeing 737
  • Fokker 100
  • Airbus A320

Charter

Virgin Australia is one of Australia’s largest operators of fly-in fly-out, corporate and leisure charter aircraft. We have had consistent year on year increase in adhoc charters on VAA aircraft, with entertainment industry, corporate events and sports groups being key focus areas.

Charter includes increased FIFO charter growth on VAA aircraft, with three new East Coast ports inducted for charter within the past year.

Virgin Australia has an increased focus on charter at executive level, with a number of initiatives in the pipeline.

The below statement comes from Arjan Kalsi, First Officer B737

Growing up we were not wealthy. My Dad was a refugee as a child and did his best providing for us. I had to pay for most of my education and flying post high school, every job I've had since I left (state) school at 16 has been both good and not so good.

I started as a charter pilot/ flight instructor at the age of 18 after flying training, then flying in Kenya, Angola as well as the Middle East (Kuwait and Dubai) with the United Nations World Food Program (UNFP).

At the age of 24 I moved to Darwin and Cairns flying Maritime patrol with Australian Customs followed and then finally Virgin Blue / Australia since 2007. I am lucky I didn't pay the ultimate price like a few of my colleagues. Airline flying is not glamorous however being entrusted to pilot one of those large aircraft cannot be described in words. It's certainly a privilege.

Why I like working at Virgin? 

Because it enables me to continue my affair with aviation something that started at an early age. It helps provide my family a good standard of living within Australia. The people I work with on a day to day basis are like minded and enjoy the dynamics and work together through many of the challenges that come with being a pilot today. Is it the perfect job? Frankly I don't think such a job exists, but like most things in life, what you put into it is what you get out of it and I consider myself lucky to be a B737 pilot for Virgin Australia. 

Minimum Requirements

The minimum flying hours experience and qualifications requirements are outlined below:

Direct Entry First Officers Turbo-prop

  • Minimum total flight time of 400 hours of which:
    • 300 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aeroplane (excluding ICUS).
  • A current Australian ATPL or CPL with MCC course and passes in all ATPL theory subjects.
  • Australian Instrument Rating with MEA, IAP 2D and IAP 3D endorsement.
  • English language proficiency Level 6.
  • A current Australian Class 1 Medical Certificate.
  • Be assessed by the Head of Flying Operations/Chief Pilot and Head of Training & Standards (or delegates) as suitable.

Direct Entry Command Turboprop

  • Minimum total flight time of 3000 hours of which:
    • Minimum of 1500 hours in command of multi engine, multi crew aircraft certificated for operations by a crew of at least 2 pilots.
  • A current Australian ATPL or have completed all requirements for the issue of an ATPL with the exception of the ATPL flight test.
  • Australian Instrument Rating with MEA, IAP 2D and IAP 3D endorsement.
  • English language proficiency Level 6.
  • A valid Australian Class 1 Medical Certificate.
  • Be assessed by the Head of Flying Operations/Chief Pilot and Head of Training & Standards (or delegates) as suitable.

Direct Entry Second Officers

  • Minimum total flight time of 400 hours of which:
    • 300 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aeroplane (excluding ICUS).
  • A current Australian ATPL or CPL with MCC course and passes in all ATPL theory subjects.
  • Australian Instrument Rating with MEA, IAP 2D and IAP 3D endorsement.
  • English language proficiency Level 6.
  • A current Australian Class 1 Medical Certificate
  • Be assessed by the Head of Flying Operations/Chief Pilot and Head of Training & Standards (or delegates) as suitable.

Direct Entry First Officers Jet

  • Minimum total flight time of 500 hours of which:
    • 300 hours in command of a powered fixed wing aeroplane (excluding ICUS) which includes 200 hours in command of a multi-engine aircraft (excluding ICUS), or
    • 500 hours on a jet aircraft type operated by the Virgin Australia Group.
  • A current Australian ATPL or CPL with MCC course and passes in all ATPL theory subjects.
  • Australian Instrument Rating with MEA, IAP 2D and IAP 3D endorsement.
  • English language proficiency Level 6.
  • A current Australian Class 1 Medical Certificate.
  • Be assessed by the Head of Flying Operations/Chief Pilot and Head of Training & Standards (or delegates) as suitable.

* Those with a NZ licence must have applied for the CASA equivalent licence, through the Trans-Tasman Mutual Agreement process, prior to the commencement of the recruitment assessment process. Evidence of an application will need to be presented at the assessment interview.

Virgin Australia provides entry opportunities in Australia to Boeing 737 First Officer, Fokker 100 First Officer, Boeing 777 Second Officer, and ATR 72 Captain and First Officer positions. Additionally, we provide entry opportunities in New Zealand to Boeing 737 First Officer positions.

Stage 1 - Application Review

Applications will be reviewed and candidates will be prioritised to progress to the next stage.

Stage 2 – Aptitude Testing, Simulator Assessment and Interview

Virgin Australia has partnered with Aviation Australia to conduct Psychometric (Aptitude) Testing and Simulator Assessment.Aviation Australia will contact candidates to arrange a date to conduct these tests. The following day candidates will undertake interview panel and group activity assessments with Virgin Australia staff.
