Weekend Itinerary: Byron Bay

Summer is coming, the sun is shining and the East Coast is calling.. We've come up with a comprehensive two-day itinerary so you can make the most of your time in the bay.

DAY 1

Folk

Nourish yourself with an organic, ethical and plant-based breakfast at the enchanting oasis that is Folk. The healthy fare is deceptively delicious and the lush aesthetic makes for a perfect introduction to the bohemia of the bay.

Wategos

After breakfast, it’s time to hit the waves. Ditch the main beach and make a beeline for Wategos. This tree-lined cove is a salty slice of paradise with turquoise water, rolling waves and crisp white sand. If you’re looking for something more secluded, head east over the rocks to Little Wategos. In high tide, you can access Little Wategos from the Cape Byron Walking Track.

Top Shop

On your way back into town, drop into Top Shop to grab a burger and a smoothie. This laidback corner store is a Byron Bay institution serving up simple, local and organic free-range produce.

The retail real estate of Byron Bay shines a sun-kissed light on local Australian designers with haute-hip undertones. Design highlights include:

For a wardrobe update, be sure to check out:

The Bolt Hole

Once you’ve had your fill of retail therapy, meander down to The Bolt Hole for a sunset session and a grungy feast. The team woodsmoke their BBQ in house using locally sourced, organic produce whilst serving up killer cocktails with a prohibition touch.

DAY 2

Bayleaf Cafe

Break your fast at the hippest joint in town. Bayleaf is archetypal ‘Byron Bay’, serving up nourishing, seasonal and robust dishes in a rustic, laidback setting. Menu staples include the Dukkah Poached Eggs served on organic sourdough with heirloom tomatoes, marjoram, rocket, buffalo mozzarella, chardonnay vinegar and lavender infused honey. Wash it down with the iconic Coconut Cold Brew for a perfect start to the day.

Bangalow

After breakfast, it’s time to explore. Meander inland through the lush hinterlands and you’ll reach the picture-perfect community of Bangalow. This humble town is quietly home to some of the region's top designers. If you’re on the hunt for eclectic & luxe fashion and décor, be sure to check out:

One for the road

Before you hit the road again, stop by Red Ginger for some takeaway yum cha and delectable desserts. This charming and eclectic Asian grocer dishes up some of the fluffiest steam buns and the sweetest egg tarts outside of Hong Kong.

Whites Beach

Dumplings in tow, it’s time for adventure. Head off the beaten track to the secluded oasis that is Whites Beach and spend your afternoon soaking up the sun and serenity in this untouched wonderland. To get here, take the National Park turnoff at Broken Head and trek through the forest (on both car and foot) toward the rugged coastline. The view is worth the hike.

St Elmo.

A day of adventure calls for a culinary exploration. St Elmo. is an intimate establishment serving up mod Iberian tapas and sophisticated cocktails. Menu highlights include the Ceviche served with citrus, coconut, pickled peach and sweet potato crisps, the Queso Frito and the Alcachofa featuring Jerusalem artichoke, Jamón, peas, button mushrooms and chickpea dumplings. Cap your weekend escape off with a Phoenix in The Rye whiskey cocktail or a quintessential horchata -¡Salud! and good night.
