Segway, sustainable way, electric way – there are so many ways to see South Australia’s wineries

There are an ever-increasing list of options to those that feel like tweaking the standard routine of tasting and nibbling on local produce available at the majority of cellar doors.

Sustainability is rightly a major focus for many wineries as it is for those of us who are concerned in the longevity of this big round ball we live on. Raidis Estate recently commissioned what is Australia’s first winery Tesla recharge station at their Coonawarra cellar door facility.

Tesla drivers travelling along the Limestone Coast in the south of the state will be able to stop at Raidis and charge their cars in only three hours.

A wine tasting and a lunch at Pipers of Penola while your car charges certainly sounds like a very pleasant option for Tesla drivers needing a top-up in this neck of the woods.

On a recent trip to Kangaroo Island I noticed signs for charging stations as I travelled around and indeed, there are several electric cars available for hire at the airport and five recharging stations available at the Airport, Kingscote, Penneshaw, and Parndana for those touring the wineries of this wonderful slice of South Australia.

In the Barossa Valley, the national treasure that is Seppeltsfield provides a novel way to soak up the history of this epic estate.

Segway Sensations SA offer several guided tour options around the estate for those wine lovers looking for something a bit more adventurous.

Learn your Segway skills in the Seppeltsfield picnic grounds before heading off on a trail through heritage-listed sites and 19th century Barossa architecture, tranquil gardens and stunning vineyard vistas. Sixty-minute tours start at $99 and if your balance is anything like mine, I’d recommend the early morning tour or at least utilising the spittoon at earlier cellar door visits for the sake of safety.

Cycling in wine regions is well established; the Riesling Trail in the Clare Valley and the trail in the Barossa from Angaston to Lyndoch are just two examples. The good folks at Escape Goat Adventures offer a McLaren Vale Bike and Wine Day that is the perfect balance of exercise and indulgence.

If arriving in style is more your thing, a helicopter wine tour could be just the ticket. Barossa Helicopters, Adelaide Helicopters and South Coast Helicopters all have wine tour options that will have you arriving like a rock star.
