Downtown is what’s up in today’s New York City. In lower Manhattan, an upbeat vibe breathes life into everything from shopping the boutiques at the sleek new Westfield to savouring a glass of French bubbles on the sunny terrace at Beaubourg bar and restaurant.

In lower Manhattan you’ll find the delectable gourmet food hall Le District, known to locals as the French version of Eataly. If you’re more pizza than croissants, there’s also a downtown Eataly for delicious bites from Italy.

Downtown is the place to pick up incredible designer bargains (up to 80 per cent off!) at the flagship Century 21 store on Cortlandt Street. Be prepared to forage for the very best finds in fashion, shoes, homewares and accessories. Stake your claim before somebody else does.

Just around the corner is the powerful 9/11 Memorial Museum and One World Observatory, a marvel of modern engineering and an inspiring tribute. Ride the elevator to the 100th floor and on a clear day you can see forever. Well, at least as far as Staten Island.

If it’s sunny, hop on the East River Ferry as it departs the Financial District for DUMBO. An acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass, Brooklyn’s DUMBO enjoys some of the most jaw-dropping views of the Manhattan skyline and the Brooklyn Bridge.

Two more stops on the ferry heading north of DUMBO and you’ll be in hipster paradise, aka Williamsburg. On Saturdays, East River State Park turns into a haven for the hungry as Smorgasburg fires up. The largest weekly open-air food market in the US, this is the spot to feast on gourmet grub and sips from more than 100 local vendors. Bring cash - and a big appetite.

Still hungry for more? Head up north to the Bronx to reach Yankee Stadium, the Cathedral of Baseball. Seize the opportunity to sink your teeth into a hot dog or juicy buns from Bareburger as you cheer on the hometown heroes, the New York Yankees. Sport is a religion in New York, and fans are also disciples of basketball, football and ice hockey. Catch a game and cheer like a local.

New York City never sleeps but that doesn’t mean you won’t enjoy a good night’s rest. At The Redbury New York, part of the glam SBE hotels group, weekly yoga classes on the terrace are the perfect way to rise and shine. Later, refuel with a crispy-crust pizza at the hotel’s Roman-inspired pizzeria, Marta, part of famed chef’s Danny Meyer’s Union Square Hospitality Group. It’s a NoMad neighbourhood favourite.

One bite of the Big Apple is never enough. Start planning your next visit with Virgin Australia and Delta Air Lines
