Discover New York

New York City brims with things to see, do, taste and experience year-round, but Christmas in the city is truly magical.

French writer, Simone De Beauvoir once said: “There is something in the New York air that makes sleep useless”  and luckily so, because eliminating sleep is about the only way to experience everything the city has to offer.

Five boroughs, 8 million locals, 50 million annual visitors, 90,000 hotel rooms, 13,000 yellow taxis and 300 McDonald’s, all crammed into an area half the size of Sydney or London. Home to iconic landmarks, New York City has saturated popular culture as the setting of a thousand films, and the subject of a thousand songs.

Get lost in the crowd at Times Square. Take in the view from atop the Empire State Building. Experience the majesty of the Statue of Liberty from aboard the Staten Island Ferry. Pay homage to the fallen at the World Trade Center Site. Join the hustle and bustle of Wall Street. Walk the Brooklyn Bridge. Take in the masterpieces of the Guggenheim or the Met.

Catch a show on Broadway. Shop for a ring at Tiffany’s. Chow into a Katz sandwich. Visit a gospel church in Harlem. Root on the Knicks at Madison Square Garden. Heckle the visiting team at Yankee Stadium.

Take a seat on Carrie’s brownstone steps. Enjoy a tipple at Barney, Marshall, Lily, Robin and Ted’s local bar. Shop the streets around Monica and Rachel’s apartment. Tuck into a meal at Jerry, George, Kramer and Elaine’s favourite diner. Stay at Kevin McCallister’s luxury hotel of choice.

New York City brims with things to see, do, taste and experience year-round, but Christmas in the city is truly magical.

Strap on a pair of ice skates in Central Park. Marvel at the tree of Rockefeller Plaza. Sing along with the street carollers. Stare in awe at the window displays of Barneys, Saks, Bloomingdale’s and Bergdorf Goodman. Take in Radio City Music Hall’s Christmas Spectacular. Visit Macy’s elaborate Santaland. Ride the subway to the Bronx to see the New York Botanical Garden’s Holiday Train Show.

American novelist, John Updike once said: “The true New Yorker secretly believes that people living anywhere else have to be, in some sense, kidding”. A holiday in this enchanting city leaves most visitors thinking the same.
