The Los Angeles suburb has long represented the glitz and glamour of the film, television and music industries, and while most studios no longer call the suburb home, the phrase “I’m going to Hollywood” still rings with the hope and desire of ‘making it big’.

The neighbourhood’s most happening hub is Hollywood Boulevard. The Boulevard sees the imaginary world of movies clash with real life, as the physical presence of the greats can be felt, radiating from Grauman's hand and feet prints and the stars of the Walk of Fame. 

Fostering an invigorating energy, the lively hotspot is home to many of LA’s most iconic landmarks. The stretch between North Sycamore Avenue and North Las Palmas Avenue alone boasts Grauman's Chinese Theatre, the Roosevelt Hotel, Hollywood and Highland shopping centre, and the current home of the Oscars, Dolby Theatre.

The touristy feel of Hollywood subsides just blocks away in the city of West Hollywood. Part residential suburb and part celebrity hangout, WeHo, as the locals call it, offers a more authentic insight into LA life. 

The city’s most famous landmark is the notorious and electric Sunset Boulevard. Lined with iconic palm trees and lit-up by neon signs and ostentatious billboards, the Strip (as it is known) boasts a slew of legendary nightlife haunts, popular dining hotspots and exclusive boutiques. 

The list of bars on the Strip reads like the contents of a celeb gossip magazine, with the likes Chateau Marmont, Skybar, The Standard and The London all holding post on the illustrious thoroughfare. Don’t just show up and expect to get in; door policies are strict, call ahead to secure a place on the door list. 

Running parallel to Sunset Boulevard, Santa Monica Boulevard is also a hive of activity. The centre of LA’s renowned Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender (LGBT) community, the area between Robertson and La Cienega carries the nickname “Boys Town”, and proudly features rainbow flags and crossings. When the night sets in, Boys Town’s gay bars come to life with a sense of revelry and a fun atmosphere to be enjoyed by all.
