Stunning island atolls, like the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups, act as the prefect playground for a tropical getaway.
A state of natural disaster was called, thousands were displaced and evacuated, and Fiji’s tourism – the country’s lifeblood – suffered greatly.
Today the water has subsided, the weather has cleared, and the locals are smiling again. Fiji is back to its vibrant self; and as the dry season sets in (May to October) there’s no better time to discover the South Pacific island paradise.
Renowned for its palm-fringed beaches, crystal-clear water, friendly locals and relaxed island vibe, Fiji is an enchanting holiday destination.
Stunning island atolls, like the Mamanuca and Yasawa island groups, act as the perfect playground for a tropical getaway. Surrounded by breathtaking scenery and bays, the islands host a number of water sports adventures – such as boating, yachting, snorkelling and scuba diving – and world-class resorts like family-friendly sanctuary Plantation Island Resort; backpacker paradise Beachcomber Island Resort; and child-free retreat Matamanoa Island Resort.
Just off the coast of Nadi, close by the heart-shaped island of Tavarua, one of the world’s most powerful and challenging waves, Cloudbreak attracts thousands of adrenaline junkies every year. In June, as the fourth stop on the 2012 ASP World Championship Tour, the inaugural Volcom Fiji Pro will see the world’s best surfers flock to Fiji’s idyllic isles to get barrelled at breaks like Cloudbreak and nearby Restaurants.
Fiji’s main island Viti Levu is also rich with resorts and adventure. A gateway to the Mamanuca Islands, Denarau Island is a haunt for the rich and famous, boasting Sheraton, Sofitel and Radisson hotels, as well as the Port Denarau – one of Fiji’s finest retail and dining zones.
Tourism hub, Nadi town is dotted with a myriad of handicrafts and souvenir shops, markets and eateries. The country’s capital Suva features Fiji’s most concentrated mix of ethnicities and cultures, amid a piecemeal of colonial buildings and modern shopping centres. While the Coral Coast is speckled with small towns and rolling green hills, and is fringed by reefs and the Pacific Ocean.
