39 Hours in Fremantle

Weekend breaks with mates are great, but let’s be honest – between travel time and down time, there’s never a full 48 hours to burn.

From Friday drinks to Sunday brunch (and all the moments in between), our 39-hour guide will have you experiencing the best of this trendy bohemian borough before getting back to reality.

Wine glasses

Get into the Friday night festivities as soon as you touch down at Fremantle’s favourite craft brewing institution: Little Creatures. If you’re travelling with a crowd, settle into one of the huge picnic tables beneath the warehouse rafters, or try to snag a seat out the back, where all the ales, lagers and pilsners you can drink come with spectacular views of the sun setting behind the ocean.

Fremantle portsOnce you’ve soaked up the buzzing after-work vibes next to the harbour, grab a bite at one of Freo’s top restaurants. For French hors d’oeuvres and old world wines, go to Whisper Wine Bar in the city’s nightlife precinct, or head to Bread in Common, where house baked loaves accompany an array of modern Australian small plates. After more casual fare? Check out Run Amuk – an effortlessly cool eatery revolutionising the sausage sizzle with locally-made snags and gourmet toppings.

After dinner, stop in for a few drinks at one of Freo’s small bars, like Strange Company or Mrs Brown, then catch a gig in the city’s most-loved live music venue, Mojos Bar.

Friends walking in street

Start your Saturday morning off with a cruise down Fremantle’s café-loving promenade: the Cappuccino Strip. Nestled between Bannister Street and Parry Street in South Terrace, this extensive collection of coffee shops and breakfast joints has just the fix for the morning after. Settle in for a spot of people watching with your brew, or get your beverage of choice to go before heading further south to some of Freo’s best brunch spots.

breakfast foodContinue your caffeine buzz at Freo breakfast institution, The Roasting Warehouse, or dig in to a spread at local favourite Ootong & Lincoln. As you make your way back to the heart of the city, stop en route at South Terrace’s seemingly endless array of boutiques, or make a beeline for the Fremantle Markets, which overflow with fresh produce, crafts, clothing and homewares every Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

Bathers beachNot one for shopping? Skip South Terrace and head straight for Bathers Beach House in South Beach, where more craft brews, cocktails and an extensive wine list await. Follow your feast with a dip in the ocean and a few hours in the Western Australian sunshine and you and your crew will be more than ready to tackle the rest of the day.

Man singing

After a morning of shopping or a swim in the sea, there’s still time to capitalise on a few Freo activities before nightfall. If you manage to time your visit with the annual Fremantle Festival, be sure to book tickets to one of the thought-provoking, art-based events. Alternatively, check out local art and culture at the Fremantle Arts Centre, which boasts a regularly rotating schedule of exhibitions, concerts and performances all year round. Happen to be in town during footy season? Catch the bounce at Subiaco Oval and spend the day in a sea of purple, cheering on the Fremantle Dockers in the company of some of Australia’s fiercest fans.

Sign saying barWhen the sun starts to set, kick off your second soiree in the city’s east end. Grab an aperitif at Young George – a quirky bar and bottle shop – then head to The Mantle – a collaborative space that sees multiple foodie pop-ups combine into one, including a BYO pizzeria and an upscale South American tapas bar. From there, see out your weekend at the Sweetwater Rooftop Bar, which lays claim to one of WA’s best cocktail lists (not to mention panoramic views over Fremantle).

Green smoothie

With hours to spare before your onward journey, there’s still time to squeeze in a few more sights. Take a quick spin through the historic streets of central Freo, checking out heritage-listed buildings like Fremantle Prison and The Round House, then grab a quick bite at nearby coffee bar and eatery, The Attic. Want to detoxify after a big weekend? Make a final stop at The Raw Kitchen en route to the airport and grab a green smoothie before your return flight home.
