As a thriving iron-ore site, Port Hedland’s natural harbour is often populated with imposing freight ships – a stark contrast to the town's pristine beaches.
Marking the south-western terminus of Eighty Mile Beach, Port Hedland hosts an incredible array of marine life, like nesting flatback turtles and migrating whales, and is within easy reach of the Millstream and Karijini national parks.

Port Hedland is divided into two main areas, Port Hedland and South Hedland. Both areas hosts a good range of dining opportunities, spanning much-loved restaurants, take away cafes and fast food eateries.
Asian cuisine is popular in the mining town. Chinese restaurants such as Dynasty Garden Chinese Restaurant and Oriental Galley Chinese Restaurant serve much-loved favourites; Bangkok Rose Thai Restaurant and Komayaka Oriental Restaurant add a little variety; while eateries like Satay Corner and Yummy Noodle provide quick bites.
As common in most regional centres, pubs are a source of both good entertainment and food in Port Hedland. Last Chance Tavern, Hamilton Motel and Port Hedland Walkabout Hotel are three of the area’s favourite meeting places, offering affordable and satisfying pub meals. The Walkabout is famous for its Red Dog Saloon, an ode to the area’s most notorious Kelpie.
A number of Port Hedland hotels and motels restaurants have a great influence on the local dining scene. Housed in one of the town’s most iconic buildings, The Esplanade restaurant is a local institution. Centrally located and situated within the Hospitality Inn, the Pilbara Room also considered one Port Hedland’s best dining options. While South Hedland Motel Restaurant is the south’s go-to for a good meal.
The town also enjoys a decent variety of well-known and local takeaway restaurants, such as McDonald’s and Chicken Treat, and local hangouts Shana’s Café and Dixon's Truck Stop.

Port Hedland’s retail scene is focused around five main areas: Port Headland Shopping Centre, Boulevard Shopping Centre, South Hedland Shopping Centre, The Wedgefield Industrial Area and between Wedge and Edgar streets.
The area’s major shopping centres are the Boulevard Shopping Centre and the South Hedland Shopping Centre, where a mixture of well-known retailers, local brands and service providers can be found.
The Wedgefield Industrial Area contains a variety of light and service industry premises. While a range of cultural, recreation and shopping facilities, as well as major banks can be found on Wedge and Edgar streets.
