The High-Altitude Graduate program is a 24-month program that has been designed to accelerate development through an integrated hands-on approach with a focus on building our future leaders across the Virgin Australia Group.

This program is like no other and will kick-start your journey to fast track your career where the sky is the limit.

Our Graduates are resilient, innovative, self-starters who have the ability to adapt, grow and positively contribute to our business. From day one you will have real responsibility and the opportunity to have a genuine impact to your designated business division.

The Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate program offers roles in, Legal, IT, Finance, People, Customer Journey, Revenue, Network & Distribution and Operations.. Over the course of the 24 month program you will experience: 

  • Jump onboard program
    Orientation and onboarding events in week one of the program.
  • Buddies
    Have support from someone who has been there, done that and can help you find your way in the early days of starting your career.
  • 'Sector’ rotations
    Four six-monthly rotations that graduates complete during the 24-month program.
  • ‘Short Haul’ routes
    Three short immersions in certain parts of the Virgin Australia Group that otherwise would not be experienced during the rotations. These experiences help to broaden exposure and increase acumen of the Virgin Australia business.
  • Stretch ‘Long Haul’ assignments
    Participate in two real business projects that will provide experiential learning and opportunities to contribute to in a way that makes a visible change to the business.
  • Leader led masterclasses
    Designed to impart knowledge and learning from our leaders, to help you build your capability and accelerate your development and career.
  • Group presentation to the Executive team
    A unique opportunity for you to present to the top team, sharing your insights, learnings and recommendations with Executive Committee members on opportunities to continuously improve our business.
  • 'Now you’re flying!' graduation
    Event held at the conclusion of the two year graduate program to celebrate your achievements.

Virgin Australia Graduate High Altitude Airlines Program
(Commercial and Operations)

Our Airlines program is where the rubber hits the tarmac, with opportunities found with our mainline Virgin Australia in Brisbane and our low cost carrier Tigerair in Melbourne. A Graduate entering the airlines stream will have the benefit of rotating across divisions to gain a well-rounded understanding of our business. Rotations are found in teams that include:

Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate Finance Program

Our Finance team is responsible for the financial analysis, reporting and forecasting for the business. This critical function supports the business and the board in meeting our objectives and the provision of prudent advice on business opportunities. Extensive number crunching goes without saying but it’s the interrogation of the data, the analysis, the reporting and the forecasting that make the world of difference in both; supporting the company and the board in meeting our objectives; and the provision of prudent advice on business opportunities. As a graduate within the Finance team you may work across the various streams of:

  • Financial Accounting - playing an integral role in the delivery, collation and review of the Group’s forecasting process and providing analysis and insight into the Groups financial position.
  • Treasury & Leasing - actively managing risks through hedging, cash management, structured funding activities and commercial lease negotiation and advice for our Fleet.
  • Business Transformation (Performance & Advisory) - maximising the performance of the Virgin Australia Group portfolio businesses.
  • Transaction Services - encompassing payroll, accounts payable/receivable as well as credit and fraud.
  • Tax - supporting the business in achieving the strategic, commercial and operational objectives by delivering quality advice. 

Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate IT Program

Virgin Australia’s IT department is on a mission to build and deliver truly great products and services that transform our business and make great customer experiences. In the most simplistic terms, this department is responsible for end-to-end project delivery and implementing quality projects on time and on budget.

As a graduate within the Information Technology team you may work across the various streams of:

  • Operations – running the function of our airline IT systems, responsible for end to end IT support.
  • CRC – the engine room of Virgin Australia’s core operating system, Sabre.
  • Airline Operations – working with a number of different stakeholders including developers, testers, architects, analysts, product owners, and business SMEs to deliver technology solutions into production environments using automated toolsets and processes.
  • Digital and Emerging Technology – assisting with the delivery of innovative projects from ideation through to full development and helping drive the development of digital strategy across all aspects of the Virgin Australia business.

In a vibrant Information Technology department, your passion for great service and attention to detail will see you develop strong rapport with your colleagues and business partners. Our team is a passionate bunch, we embrace new technologies and eat change for breakfast, never forgetting that the airline never sleeps!

 

Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate Law

Our Legal and Risk Division is responsible for assessing legal, risk, sustainability and crisis events for the Virgin Australia Group. The Legal and Risk team is made up of the following divisions and as a graduate you will work across the various streams:

  • Internal Audit - providing assurance and consulting activity designed to add value and improve an organisation's operations.
  • Workplace Relations - providing specialist advice on complex and technical employment law matters.
  • Legal - advising on a large range of matters including: contract negotiation, competition and consumer law, privacy and corporate law, intellectual property law, real property law, commercial litigation and guest litigation, discrimination and safety investigations and litigation.
  • Sustainability - supporting and overseeing the development and implementation of Virgin Australia’s Sustainability Strategy and the execution of specific initiatives relating to sustainability.
  • Business Resilience - helping to transform and influence the capability of the organisation to deal with this variety of crisis events, with the ability to bounce back to recovery quickly, minimising impacts.

Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate People

Our People team is primarily focused on providing the systems, tools and guidance to assist the business in delivering its business model. The people team provide support to ensure we have the right structure for the business, the right people in the right roles doing the right work in an environment where people can work productively to their full potential.

As a graduate within the People team you will work across the various streams:

  • Business Partnering - assisting the various departments across the Virgin Australia Group to achieve their goals, supported by our people strategy
  • Organisational Development (Leadership Development, Talent, Diversity & Inclusion) - supporting our leaders and internal talent by designing best practice programs and initiatives that support their development
  • Talent Acquisition - sourcing the best talent across Australia/NZ
  • Staff and Duty Travel - for coordinating all travel for Virgin Australia employees, whether for business or pleasure, so they can enjoy the world’s most rewarding travel experience 

 You will be an innovative thinker and highly adaptable, you are self-motivated, passionate and want to be a future leader. We already know you work well under pressure and can adapt to change, because that is university life. You must:

  • Be an Australian or New Zealand citizen or permanent resident;
  • Be a minimum of 18 years of age;
  • Be eligible to obtain an Australian Security Identification Card (ASIC);
  • Have graduated university with either an undergraduate degree in 2017, 2018 or be expecting completion of your degree in 2019;
  • Have achieved a GPA (Grade Point Average) of 65% or higher;
  • Be medically fit to perform and willing to attend a medical assessment at your own expense;
  • Be able to undertake Domestic and International travel;
  • Be able to commit to a full-time role, with varying hours of work. (This will be subject to your area of placement during the program and Virgin Australia's operational needs);
  • Be able to relocate at your own expense to take up the graduate program in either one of our locations in Melbourne or Brisbane.   

How many positions are available?

We are looking for between 12 – 15 graduates for our 2020 High Altitude Graduate Program. We will have positions available across a variety of streams including Human Resources (People), Finance, Information Technology, Legal and General.

When does the Virgin Australia High Altitude Graduate Program Commence?

Our High Altitude Graduate Program will commence in February 2020 and will run for two years.

Can I apply for a base I am currently not located in (for example, I am based in Brisbane but would like to apply for a Melbourne based position)?

Yes, please be advised that you would need to attend a Recruitment Day at your preferred base. If you were to be successful and offered a role, all relocation costs are at your own expense.

What can I expect?

Our two year graduate program will kick–start your career and fast track your career path to where the sky is the limit. The program is made up of four rotations. These will help you develop core operational and leadership skills.

We’ll provide you with ongoing support right the way through the Program including:
• Induction training
• Mentors to provide coaching and guidance
• Buddy allocated from our graduate alumni or experienced colleagues
• Ongoing master class events throughout the 2 years
• Leadership and functional development

What career development will I get?

We will provide you with a two year structured learning and development framework to ensure you develop industry knowledge and the leadership skills to transition into a permanent role at the end of the graduate program.

You’ll be supported by your Rotational Line Manager, your mentors and your colleagues. You will also network with key leaders across the business

If you are unsuccessful in this round, this does not mean your Virgin Australia dream is over. You will be welcomed to reapply for the 2021 High Altitude Graduate Program
