TRADE RELEASE 23 January 2020

Virgin Australia's New Economy Fare Brand on International Long Haul Flights

Virgin Australia has today introduced a new Economy fare brand – Economy Light – on all International Long Haul flights operated by Virgin Australia from Australia. This new fare brand aligns with the Basic Economy fare brand of our codeshare partner, Delta Air Lines.

The new Economy fare structure will provide greater:

• Choice for guests to select a product offering that best suits their needs;
• Flexibility for guests to buy a restrictive fare (suitable for our cost-conscious travellers), or an inclusive fare that offers more value and flexibility with additional options if the guest’s plans change; and
• Value for guests to customise their travel extras, including baggage and seating to save on extras that may not be needed depending on their preference.

It is important to note that Economy Light is significantly more restrictive than current Economy fares and is non-upgradable, non-changeable, non-combinable, non-refundable for change of mind and seat assignment is only permitted within the check-in window. Where a guest has purchased an Economy Light fare and subsequently cancels their booking for change of mind, this will result in the guest forfeiting 100% of the base fare (excl. taxes, and unless the guest is entitled to a refund under the Australian Consumer Law) as travel credits are not permitted.

Economy Light fares also only permit one piece of checked baggage up to 23kg, compared with Getaway, Elevate and Freedom fares where two pieces of checked baggage up to 23kg each is included.
