Virgin Blue Increases Launceston Services By 100%

Virgin Blue has announced it will ramp up services between Launceston and the mainland with year round daily direct flights to Sydney commencing 4 September, as well as adding an additional afternoon service to Melbourne from 5 September.

The new and improved schedule represents a 100% increase in capacity with the airline effectively doubling the number of services and destinations to and from Launceston.

Following strong backing from the people of Tasmania, the service-minded low fare airline has taken the concerns of business travellers seriously and remains committed to boosting services to regions that clearly require a serious, quality jet service.

Virgin Blue’s customer-friendly check-in, boarding and seating policies is an added bonus for Guests who don’t want to be forced to choose between low fares and great service.

Virgin Blue spokeswoman, Amanda Bolger, said, “We are delighted to be bringing more good news in the way of additional services and excellent connecting fare options to the travelling public of Tasmania, especially at a time when it is most needed.

“Virgin Blue first introduced a seasonal non-stop service between Launceston and Sydney in December 2002 and the popularity of the route has given Virgin Blue the confidence to commit to continuing the flights every day of the year.”

She continued, “What we’ve found is that when you offer the right price and quality service, people will travel anytime of the year. Support for all our current services has been consistently strong so it was a natural decision for us to cater for the growing demand and, in return, support the region that supports low fare competition”.

“If we continue to see strength in the market we will certainly consider committing even more services between Tasmania and the mainland,” she added.

As well as benefiting the travelling public, the new daily services are expected to boost tourism to the region with affordable direct flights making Tassie a perfect choice for holiday-makers keen to enjoy spectacular wilderness and wildlife, sample some fine ales and wines, or indulge in the island’s world class seafood.

The much improved schedule will also give Tasmanian travellers the freedom to travel further afield with Virgin Blue’s convenient through-fare connections to Brisbane, Gold Coast, Cairns, Darwin and the Sunshine Coast (via Sydney) and Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide, Canberra and the Gold Coast (via Melbourne).

Virgin Blue will operate its award winning service on the most modern and comfortable jets flying across Bass Strait with its fleet of Boeing 737’s, adding more than 2200 seats a week in each direction.

Everyday fares between Launceston and Sydney start from $95* one-way on the net, with $305* one way on the net Flexi-Saver.

For the convenience of both business and leisure travellers the new service is scheduled for a mid-morning departure from Sydney and early afternoon return from Launceston.

The improved schedule to Melbourne has been designed to meet the needs of all travellers, but especially Tasmania’s business community who have been asking for more convenient morning and afternoon departures to the Victorian capital.

From 5 September the three weekday services to Melbourne will depart Launceston Monday – Friday at 6.15am, 10.00am and 4.15pm before turning around and arriving back in Launie at 9.30am, 3.45pm and 8.55pm.

The multi-award winning low far airline will also add extra services during the peak travel school holiday period, above and beyond the three existing services.
