Australia's Future Pilots Take Flight in Adelaide

Virgin Australia will officially launch its inaugural Pilot Cadet Program today by welcoming the first eight cadets to Flight Training Adelaide’s facility at Parafield airport.

Today marks the first day of a 55 week course, which will involve a combination of hands-on flying hours, simulator training and ground theory training.

Virgin Australia Chief Pilot and General Manager of Flight Operations Brad Thomann said: “In launching our first ever pilot training program, we conducted extensive research and Adelaide was the standout location.

“Parafield Airport features world-class facilities and modern training methodologies. Adelaide is also an integral part of the Virgin Australia network.

“The cadets with us today have been selected from over 1,100 applicants across Australia. On completion of the program, they will be trained as highly-skilled pilots, ready to operate as First Officers on the ATR turboprop fleet for approximately three years, before transitioning to a Virgin Australia Jet First Officer position.

“The program comes at a particularly exciting time as Parafield Airport embarks on its 20 year master plan to boost economic and employment growth and we hope that our program and the airport will both continue to grow together”, Mr Thomann said.

Unlike any other Australian airline pilot cadet program, Virgin Australia will assist all cadets financially, advancing upfront training course costs and will also provide support with accommodation and meals during the program. Each cadet will also have their own mentor, offering personal support and guidance throughout their training in Adelaide.

Virgin Australia has 328 flights servicing Adelaide each week. Virgin Australia offers direct flights from Adelaide to 7 destinations including a direct service from Adelaide to Denpasar, Indonesia. The total number of Virgin Australia flights servicing Adelaide has increased by 9% over the last year.
