Virgin Australia Pit Crew team members participate in the daily ramp operations at our airports, primarily delivering the safe and on time turnaround of our Virgin Australia aircraft.
Your typical duties will include:
- Safely loading and unloading our aircraft
- Being responsible for maintaining a safe working environment
- Driving tugs safely around the tarmac
- Transporting and loading freight
- Pushing stairs and assisting with aircraft doors
- Correctly handling and boarding pets
- Operating the disabled guest lift
- Recognising and handling dangerous goods
- Safely operate and maintain the Ground Services Equipment
You will be flexible and reliable to work in a unique environment working a rotating roster over 24 hours, 7 days a week. A physically demanding role, you must have a proven history of manual handling experience and demonstrate excellent health and fitness. Our minimum requirements:
- Minimum 18 years of age
- Australian or New Zealand citizen, or Australian permanent resident
- Competency in written and spoken English
- Demonstrated experience in manual handling or an outdoor working environment
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills
- Basic computer skills
- An excellent level of health and fitness in order to lift up to 1000 bags a day on and off the aircraft, work in confined spaces on your knees and also in all elements, rain, hail or shine
- Current unrestricted Australian State Driver’s License
- Availability to work a 24 hour rotating shift roster over 7 days, including weekends and weekdays, public holidays and peak holiday periods such as Christmas, New Year and Easter
- Ability to successfully obtain an Aviation Security Identification Card (ASIC)
Our Pit Crew opportunities are permanent part-time only, with a minimum guarantee of 22 hours per week.

How do I apply for a Pit Crew position?

Can I apply for more than one base?
Candidates can only apply for one base i.e. Sydney Pit Crew opportunities. Applications for multiple bases are not accepted. The Recruitment Team reserves the right to withdraw applications if candidates have applied for multiple bases.
Can I still apply even if my preferred base is not currently advertised online?
If we are not currently recruiting for your preferred base then we ask that you do not submit an application. Applications cannot be transferred to another base and requests for transfers will not be accepted. We suggest regularly checking the Virgin Australia Careers website for updates to see when we are next recruiting for your base of choice.
Can I apply if I am not 18 years of age?
You must be at least 18 years of age to apply for a Pit Crew role.
What should I wear for the Recruitment Day?
We recommend wearing appropriate business attire to the Recruitment Day.
Can I attend a Recruitment Day in another port?
You must attend a Recruitment Day in the port you wish to work. Pit Crew Leaders will be available on the day to provide information specific to that particular port.
How can I find out where your Recruitment Days are being held?
Once Recruitment Days are scheduled at the base you have applied and your application has been short-listed to attend a Recruitment Day, you will receive an invitation via email. This email will contain all the information you need to know about the Recruitment Day i.e. the location, date, time and what to bring. Please note that Recruitment Days are organised around the operational requirements of the business and can be scheduled several weeks or months apart.
How long does the recruitment process take and when will I start training?
The recruitment process length can vary depending on the business’s operational requirements. We do not recruit to specific numbers and hold Recruitment Days throughout the year. Therefore, if you are successful throughout the recruitment process and no training schools are available you will be placed in a Talent Pool for future training schools.
If I am not shortlisted after submitting my application online, how long will it be before I can reapply?
If your application is not shortlisted to attend a Recruitment Day, we ask that you wait 6 months before reapplying to develop your skills and experience.
If I am not progressed further after attending a Recruitment Day, how long will it be before I can reapply?
If your application is not progressed after attending a Recruitment Day, you will be required to wait 12 months before reapplying to develop your skills and experience.
Can I ask for feedback on my application?
Due to the high volume of applications received online and the large number of candidates seen at the Recruitment Days we are unable to give detailed individual feedback on your application during the initial stages of the recruitment process. Do you recruit full-time Pit Crew?
All of our Pit Crew roles are permanent part-time with a minimum guarantee of 20 hours. We only recruit full-time Pit Crew from our part-time workforce and these opportunities are based on your performance and merit in the role.
What does Pit Crew training involve?
Pit Crew training is full-time and runs for approximately two weeks. You will receive more information prior to joining regarding the specific start times, end times and days you will be required to attend training. You will be required to make yourself available for early starts, late nights and weekends for the duration of training.
Do I get paid during training?
Your paid employment starts on the first day of training and you will be classified as a trainee for the first six months of employment. Further information will be provided during the recruitment process on remuneration.
What is the Pit Crew Salary?
Virgin Australia Pit Crew are employed under an Enterprise Bargaining Agreement (EBA). Further information will be provided during the recruitment process on remuneration.
Does the company pay for me to relocate?
