Pre-purchased baggage allowance: All Domestic guests except those travelling on Saver Lite can pre-purchase baggage allowance for up to two additional pieces at the time of making your booking in addition to the fare allowance, If you wish to purchase additional baggage allowance after your booking has been made, you can do so through the Guest Contact Centre (where a service fee may apply) up to one hour before your flight. Please note, if you are a Velocity member the complimentary baggage allowance applied will be based on your status at time of travel, rather than time of booking.

• Purchase at check-in: Additional baggage allowance can be purchased at the airport for a higher fee. Please view fees below.
• Baggage allowance of up to nine pieces in total (including fare and/or Velocity membership allowances and baggage allowance that has been pre-purchased) may be checked in per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia (subject to space availability). Some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type (e.g. ATRs) or carrier (e.g. Skywest).
• VA flight numbers ranging from VA5000 to VA5199 are operated by Skywest Airlines: Pre-Purchase of additional baggage above the included allowance is not available on Skywest codeshare flights.
• Guests travelling on an Air New Zealand marketed ticket: When arriving at the airport, guests travelling with excess baggage in addition to their included baggage allowance will be charged as per Air New Zealand excess baggage rates. Please visit the Air New Zealand website to check these rates.

To minimise additional baggage fees, we suggest, where possible, you place several items or bags into one bag, case or box to count as one piece – provided it does not exceed the maximum size or weight of your baggage allowance. Please note that multiple items held together through the use of rope, tape, plastic wrap or any other similar method are not deemed to be a single piece of baggage and will not be accepted as a single piece of baggage at the check-in counter.

For example when travelling with a bike you can place additional items in your bike box such as spare wheels, tools, towels, clothes etc. as long as the box remains within the size and weight limits of your allowance. To avoid delays at the service counter, we suggest you make these precautions prior to arriving at the airport.

Infants

Adults accompanying infants are entitled to carry infant special items as checked baggage free of charge on Virgin Australia domestic flights, irrespective of their combined weight. These items include, but are not restricted to the following:

• Pram/stroller
• Portable cot
• Car seat
• Baby capsule

If the adult does not have a baggage allowance the above items can still be checked in free of charge. Other infant items, such as clothing and toys, form part of the adult's baggage allowance.

Children

Children are entitled to the same baggage allowance as adults. Adults accompanying children are entitled to carry one car seat or booster seat per child as checked baggage free of charge, irrespective of the weight. If the adult does not have a baggage allowance, the car seat or booster seat can still be checked in free of charge.

Additional baggage fees and overweight bag fees are subject to change at any time without notice.

• We cannot guarantee that additional baggage will be carried. This is at our sole discretion and is subject to aircraft loads.

For all Domestic guests (including Velocity members), additional baggage is charged at per piece rate.

Guests traveling on a Saver, Flexi or Premium/Business fare have the option to pre-purchase up to two additional pieces of baggage allowance in addition to the included baggage allowance for all fare types except Saver Lite. Saver Lite guests cannot pre-purchase any additional baggage allowance. AUD charges for total pre-purchased bag pieces in addition to the included allowance depend on fare and Velocity membership.  

Note: Additional fees will apply when adding baggage via the Guest Contact Centre.

Excess Baggage Fees for extra pieces purchased at Airport

We recommend that you pre-purchase additional baggage allowance before your check-in. A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of pre-purchased or included baggage allowances.

Fees are charged for each additional bag, per flight.

In addition, please note the following general guidelines and restrictions.

• Pieces over 32kg will not be accepted and need to be sent via freight
• Up to 9 pieces of baggage allowance in total, 2 of which can be pre-purchased may be checked per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia. Some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type e.g. ATRs or carrier e.g. Skywest
• We will use all reasonable endeavours to ensure carriage of your Baggage, including Checked Baggage, on the same flight as you. However, in some circumstances, aircraft operational limitations (for example, aircraft weight restrictions caused by unusually strong headwinds or very hot weather) may mean we are unable to carry your baggage on the same flight as you.
• Virgin Australia accepts excess baggage on a space-available basis. If the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you, it will be transported on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity available.
• Additional, overweight, and oversized baggage is accepted on a standby basis.

A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of free and pre-purchased allowances. Fees are charged for each additional piece, per one-way journey (includes formal connecting flights). Fees charged at check-in can be paid by credit card, cash or EFTPOS.

 Rates for At the Airport

We cannot accept checked baggage that is not travelling with a guest. Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as Freight.

Other Reward Seat fares

Baggage allowances for Reward Seat fares with Velocity airlines partners other than those stated above will be based on the operating carrier’s baggage allowances as found on their website and as per your class of travel. Silver, Gold and Platinum members may be entitled to further complimentary baggage allowances, as outlined at virginaustralia.com/velocity.

Infants

Adults travelling with infants are entitled to the following checked baggage, plus one stroller, bassinet or car seat.

For Virgin Australia international long haul services:

• To/from USA: one additional piece (maximum 23kg/50lb for Economy, and 32kg/70lb for Business and Premium Economy)
• To/from all other destinations: one additional piece (maximum 10kg/22lb)

Adults accompanying infants are also entitled to one extra piece of carry-on baggage, weighing up to 7kg (15lb), with dimensions equal to no more than 115cm (45in).

Children

Virgin Australia international long haul services charge excess baggage fees for any items that exceed the free checked baggage allowance. Excess baggage fees apply each way, and are cumulative (i.e. a single item of baggage may be subject to an additional piece fee and an overweight piece fee if applicable)

Note: Any single piece of checked baggage must not exceed the maximum weight and dimensions as detailed under Oversize and Fragile Items. Any piece that exceeds these restrictions must be sent as Freight. In these circumstances we recommend that guests contact their local freight forwarder, who will be able to advise what options are available.

Due to Government security regulations, Virgin Australia is unable to accept unaccompanied baggage. Unaccompanied baggage must be sent as Freight.

Allowances regarding other items such as wheelchairs and mobility aids, sporting equipment, musical instruments, seafood, meat and frozen products can be found in Oversized and Fragile Items.
