Virgin Blue To Launch Direct Weekly Flight Between Coffs Harbour And Melbourne20/09/2004
Virgin Blue has announced it will begin direct flights between Coffs Harbour and Melbourne following resounding requests from the local community.
The new weekly flight will operate every Saturday to begin with and the low fare airline will monitor the flight closely to determine if there is enough demand to increase the number of services.
The Melbourne flight will be the second Virgin Blue flight option in and out of Coffs Harbour and will compliment the original Coffs Harbour-Sydney services that were launched just over two years ago.
Virgin Blue has identified a large number of people taking advantage of connecting flights between the Victorian capital and Coffs Harbour via Sydney. This, combined with the success of the existing Sydney flights, has given the airline the confidence to introduce the direct Melbourne option to its expanding route network.
Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said “Coffs Harbour was our first regional New South Wales city and it is safe to say we are very happy with the large number of people choosing to fly with us between the two destinations be it for business or leisure.”
He continued, “We have long held the view that smaller communities deserve the opportunity to have a jet service operating into the region and are fully capable of supporting a larger aircraft. This has well and truly proven to be the case in Coffs Harbour and additional services, such as the new Melbourne flight, are a direct result of strong and steady support.”
A special launch fare of $99* one-way on the net is up for grabs from now until 26 September 2004, for travel between 6 November and 11 December 2004. Everyday low fares will start from $149* one way on the net.
Coffs Harbour locals will be able to fly direct on Virgin Blue’s Saturday flight and then return on a connecting flight via Sydney unless they would like to spend the week soaking up the shopping, cultural, sporting and culinary delights that Melbourne has to offer.
For Victorians, it also provides a convenient opportunity to sample the delights of the Coffs Harbour region, which is fast becoming recognised as a fantastic coastal playground that offers first class accommodation, stunning beaches and outstanding recreational opportunities with the old fashioned warmth and friendliness of a small beach community.”
Convenient connections will now be available via Melbourne to and from Hobart and Launceston, making it easier for tourists in both directions to travel between Coffs Harbour and Tasmania.
Virgin Blue has been working closely with local council, airport, business and tourism authorities who have been pro-active and enthusiastic in ensuring the region throws its support behind the airline’s low fare jet service.
