Virgin Blue Announces $99 Pre-Launch Special Between Melbourne And Brisbane11/07/2000
Virgin Blue Airlines today unveiled flights between Melbourne and Brisbane during the month of October for $99 (including GST), if booked before 3 August, as part of its launch game plan.
Commercial flights will begin by 1 October, 2000 with six daily services (3 return trips) on one of the key business and leisure routes in Australia.
Richard Branson, Chairman of VIRGIN Group, made the announcement while visiting the home ground of the appropriately named AFL team, Carlton BLUEs.
After kicking a few goals under the watchful eye of Coach David Parkin, Richard said that he hoped to see more people travel between the two states, not just to visit family or do business, but also to see great sporting events at affordable prices.
"We didn't want the Victorian market to be left behind when Virgin Blue takes off with fares under $100," he stated.
Richard continued, "Even after our August launch, we remain committed to being Australia's low fare carrier offering $139 fares one way, including GST, on an ongoing basis for over 50% of the seats between the two cities."
Today's announcement followed on VIRGIN's recently released $99 Brisbane-Sydney fares that hundreds of customers and travel agents have already taken advantage of.
Before visiting Carlton, Richard Branson inspected the new Common User Domestic Terminal under construction at Melbourne Airport.
He commented, "It's brilliant to see such a customer friendly facility go up so quickly; the short walk from curbside to the aircraft is sure to be appreciated by our guests onboard the aircraft."
Virgin Blue continues to work closely with the Civil Aviation Safety Authority to obtain its Air Operators Certificate for a 3 August kickoff.
