Fees and Surcharge Overview

Depending on the fare rules which apply to your booking, you may have to pay change or cancellation fees if you wish to change or cancel your booking. Change and cancellations fees are charged per person, per booking. For more information, please refer to your specific fare below.

You will have to pay a service fee if you call Virgin Australia's Guest Contact Centre to make, change or cancel a booking - see below.

Booking and Service Fees

Payments by credit card, debit card and PayPal attract a Booking and Service Fee when booked via www.virginaustralia.com or through the Virgin Australia Guest Contact Centre which will be added to the total price of your fare when you select your credit card type on the payment screen.

Fares - General Information* 

  • When bookings are created using a combination of fares from different fare types, the rules of the most restrictive fare will apply to the whole booking.
  • Depending upon what fares are available through our Guest Contact Centre, the fare for your new booking may be higher than the original.
  • You must pay any fare difference between the fare for your new booking and the original fare.
  • Your new booking must be for travel on the Virgin Australia network within 12 months of the date that the original ticket was issued (the "OTD"). Any refunds must be obtained within 12 months of the OTD.
  • Fare downgrading not permitted.
  • Separate servicing charges may apply.

Excess Baggage 

Excess Baggage Fees for extra pieces purchased at Airport

We recommend that you pre-purchase additional baggage allowance before your check-in. A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of pre-purchased or included baggage allowances.

  • Fees are charged for each additional bag, per flight.
  • In addition, please note the following general guidelines and restrictions.
  • Pieces over 32kg will not be accepted and need to be sent via freight
  • Up to 9 pieces of baggage allowance in total, 2 of which can be pre-purchased may be checked per passenger on flights operated by Virgin Australia. Some destinations may have additional restrictions depending upon aircraft type e.g. ATRs or carrier e.g. Skywest
  • We will use all reasonable endeavours to ensure carriage of your Baggage, including Checked Baggage, on the same flight as you. However, in some circumstances, aircraft operational limitations (for example, aircraft weight restrictions caused by unusually strong headwinds or very hot weather) may mean we are unable to carry your baggage on the same flight as you.
  • Virgin Australia accepts excess baggage on a space-available basis. If the baggage cannot be carried on the same flight with you, it will be transported on the next available flight with sufficient load capacity available.
  • Additional, overweight, and oversized baggage is accepted on a standby basis.

A charge will apply at the airport for any pieces in excess of free and pre-purchased allowances. Fees are charged for each additional piece, per one-way journey (includes formal connecting flights). Fees charged at check-in can be paid by credit card, cash or EFTPOS.

Extra legroom Charges

Guests can purchase extra legroom seating for domestic Australia, international short-haul and international long-haul flights. Further details can be found on the extra legroom page. Charges are outlined below.

Extra Legroom seating is available in the Economy cabin on all Virgin Australia operated flights. These flights are numbered VA 1 – VA 50.

For an additional charge, you can now reserve Extra Legroom seating in the exit rows of our Boeing 777-300ER aircraft which offers a minimum of 38 inch pitch.

Insurance Fees and Surcharges 

Travel insurance charges are based on a number of variables, such as destination, duration of travel and the type of cover. For a detailed quote, please visit Virgin Australia's comprehensive insurance provider.


Carbon Offset Charges 

Carbon offset charges vary from flight to flight. If you would like to offset your flight, all you have to do is click on the link on the Virgin Australia Travel Itinerary page, when booking your flight, to opt to offset the carbon emissions relating to your flights. You will then be taken to the Carbon Offset Checkout page, which will advise you of the emissions associated with your flight and the cost of offsetting these emissions.


Government-Imposed Taxes, Fees and Charges 

The price of Your Ticket may include taxes, fees and charges that are imposed on air transportation by government authorities.  They may represent a significant portion of the cost of air travel and are either included in the fare, or shown separately in the “TAX/FEE/CHARGE” box(es) of Your Ticket. 

You may also be required to pay taxes or fees or charges not already collected.
