Dangerous Goods that Must Not be Taken Onboard
Dangerous goods are items or substances that may endanger the safety of the aircraft or guests onboard.
Disabling devices such as mace, pepper spray or other devices containing an irritant or incapacitating substance are prohibited on a guest’s person or in their carry-on or checked baggage. Security type attaché cases containing dangerous goods such as lithium batteries or pyrotechnic devices are also forbidden.
The following items must not be taken onboard (in carry-on or checked baggage) a Virgin Australia domestic aircraft under any circumstance:

Petrol or gas engine equipment, such as a chainsaw and lawn mower or trimmer (either new or used), is not permitted.

Dangerous Goods that May be Taken Onboard
The following items may be taken onboard Virgin Australia aircraft, as specified:
Alcoholic Beverages
A maximum of 5 litres in total, per person, (containing 24%, but not more than 70% alcohol by volume) is permitted in retail packaging as carry-on or checked baggage. Consumption of alcohol carried onboard is not permitted on the aircraft.
Aerosols in Division 2.2
With no subsidiary risk for sporting or home use.
Toiletry and Medicinal Articles
Including aerosols such as hair sprays, deodorants and perfumes as carry-on or checked baggage for personal use. Each container cannot contain more than 0.5 litres or 0.5kg. Guests are not permitted to take more than 2 litres or 2kg in total. Release valves on aerosols must be protected by a cap or other suitable means to prevent inadvertent release of contents.
Medicinal Oxygen Cylinders
Guests are permitted to take medicinal oxygen cylinders onboard in their carry-on or checked baggage. Liquid oxygen systems are not permitted. Contact Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre for specific details.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with medical oxygen.
Safety Matches and Lighters
Either one small compressed gas lighter or a box of safety matches or a liquid fuel lighter, where the flammable liquid is fully absorbed, is permitted. Blue flame cigarette or pipe lighters are not permitted. These items can only be taken onboard on a guest’s person. ‘Strike anywhere’ matches are forbidden for air transport.
Dry Ice
Each guest is permitted – with the approval of Virgin Australia – to take up to 2.5kg of dry ice in a ventilated container if used to pack perishables, as carry-on or checked baggage. Guests are not permitted to combine more than the amount permitted for one person.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with dry ice.
Small Mercury Thermometers
Are permitted in carry-on or checked baggage for personal use when housed in a protective case.
Wheelchairs or Other Battery Powered Mobility Devices
Are permitted as checked baggage. Contact Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre for specific details.
Heat Producing Articles
Diving torches and other heat producing articles are permitted in carry-on or checked baggage. They must be disabled so there is no chance that they can be inadvertently switched on. If a battery is removed from a heat producing article, the battery terminals must be protected from short circuiting by the application of electrical tape or similar means.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with these items.
Non-flammable, Non-toxic Gas Cylinders, Carbon Dioxide Gas Cartridges
Worn for the operation of mechanical limbs are permitted. Spare cylinders of a similar size, if required to ensure an adequate supply for the duration of the journey, are also permitted.
Lifejackets
One lifejacket and two spare cartridges are permitted as carry-on or checked baggage as long as the compressed cartridges contain carbon dioxide or other non-flammable gas.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with a lifejacket and or spare cartridges.
Insulated Packages Containing Refrigerated Liquid Nitrogen
Sometimes termed as 'Dry Shippers', these packages can be carried in carry-on or checked baggage. They can only be used if the liquid nitrogen is fully absorbed and the package has the capacity to release any build-up of pressure. Only non-dangerous goods can be transported within the 'Dry Shipper'.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with a package that contains refrigerated liquid nitrogen.
Weapons (Guns, Knives etc.)
Are only permitted as checked baggage. Special packaging and storage conditions apply. Certain Customs requirements may apply. Contact Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre for specific details.
Note: You must tell the check-in agent that you are travelling with a weapon.
Ammunition (Cartridges for Weapons)
Guests are permitted to take quantities not exceeding 5kg of ammunition – which is classified in Division 1.4s UN0012 or UN0014 – in checked baggage only. Combinations of more than the amount allocated for one person are not permitted. Ammunition that has projectiles of an explosive or incendiary function is not permitted. Consumer Electronic Devices Containing Lithium or Lithium Ion Cells Batteries
Items such as laptops, watches, video recorders and cellular phones are permitted in carry-on or checked baggage. Lithium batteries or fuel cell systems are permitted in carry-on baggage only, as long as they are not damaged and battery terminals are insulated to prevent short circuiting.
Note: Spare lithium batteries with a watt hour rating of 100wh but not exceeding 160wh for consumer electronic devices are limited to a maximum of two in carry-on baggage only.
All spare batteries, including lithium metal or lithium ion cells or batteries, for such portable electronic devices must be carried in carry-on baggage only. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits.
Camping Stoves and Fuel Containers that have Contained a Flammable Liquid
These items may be permitted as checked baggage, as long as the fuel tanks are totally drained and action has been taken to nullify the danger. Contact Virgin Australia’s Guest Contact Centre for further details on the process required to nullify the danger.

Hair Curlers Containing Hydrocarbon Devices
One is permitted in carry-on or checked baggage as long as the safety protective cover is on. Spare cartridges are not permitted.
