Touchdown! Virgin Blue Brings New Jet Aircraft Era to Mildura

13/10/2008

FROM THE MCG AND MUSEUMS TO MERLOT AND MANDARINS!

Virgin Blue Airlines will make its first foray in to north-west Victoria today, taking off from Melbourne at 10.40am and touching down in Mildura at 11.40am for the first time.

The carrier will be bringing a full flight of Guests to celebrate Virgin Blue’s expansion in to rural Victoria.

Mildura represents the ideal destination for Virgin Blue to operate its brand new executive style EMBRAER E-Jets, which are earmarked to fly to new regional centres which have potential for growth, competition and market stimulation. The E-Jet has 78 seats, 2x2 leather seating and is tailored to suit smaller markets.

Virgin Blue Chief Commercial Officer, Stefan Pichler, will join other Virgin Blue staff, paying and VIP Guests for the launch flight which will feature complimentary champagne, one-off Mildura launch flight t-shirts and much merriment and mayhem.

“This is a wonderful day for Virgin Blue and for the people of Mildura who from today, not only have increased competition which is always good for consumers but also a jet aircraft to take them to Melbourne in comfort, style and within 60 minutes. The E-Jet is 25% quicker than other aircraft currently flying on the route so less time in the aeroplane, more time spent working or playing.”

“We chose Mildura to be Virgin Blue’s newest regional destination as it ticked all the boxes in terms of population base, existing airport infrastructure, tourism growth potential and also largely thanks to a pro-active and supportive council and business community who encouraged Virgin Blue to bring its services to the Sunraysia region.”

He continued, “Mildura is set to make its mark as an emerging tourism destination with a focus on the region’s burgeoning wine and produce offering. Affordable air access is imperative to encourage visitors to take a weekend trip to the country whether it is to enjoy the spoils of the region, visit family and friends or go about some business.”

Virgin Blue will initially operate daily flights between Melbourne and Mildura during the middle of the day. Forward bookings have been trending well so far and while it’s early days, Virgin Blue will look to increase flights or tweak the schedule timings subject to demand and support from the local community.

While the airline will continue to offer regular ad-hoc sale fares, everyday fares start from $99* one-way on the internet. Connecting flights are available from Mildura to other Virgin Blue destinations via Melbourne including Adelaide, Brisbane, Canberra, Gold Coast, Hobart, Launceston, Perth and Sydney.

As part of launch flight tradition, Virgin Blue will be doing in-flight fundraising, with all money raised going to Wings For Kids Inc Sunraysia Mallee to provide equipment and support to children with special needs.
