Virgin Blue Launches Direct Mackay-Sydney Services03/05/2006
Virgin Blue’s first direct flight from Sydney to Mackay will touch down at 2.40pm today bringing the people of Mackay the only convenient direct service to and from the New South Wales capital.
Special crazy days of May fares start from $99* one-way on the net on sale now until midnight Thursday May 4 for travel between 13 May to 11 June 2006 inclusive. Everyday low fares start from 139* one-way on the net.
The new addition to Virgin Blue services in and out of Mackay comes in the wake of strong lobbying from the local community, including the Mackay Port Authority, Chamber of Commerce and business travellers. On top of its existing daily direct flights to Brisbane, Virgin Blue will initially offer four direct flights a week between Mackay and Sydney and will closely review demand for the flights to determine potential for a daily service in the future.
Chief Commercial Officer, Stefan Pichler said, “Today’s launch of Sydney flights is the culmination of much work between the Mackay community and Virgin Blue. It is testimony to Virgin Blue’s commitment to listening to the needs of our key regional ports, and Mackay has been particularly pro-active in lobbying for more services.”
He continued, “We are hopeful that the new Sydney-Mackay services will be strongly supported by both business and leisure travellers and our team will be working hard to ensure Virgin Blue continues to be the carrier of choice for Mackay locals.”
The launch flight will feature traditional Virgin Blue activities as well as an in-flight auction to raise funds for the World’s Greatest Shave to assist leukaemia research and to provide support for patients and families living with leukaemia. Mackay Port Authority will also be hosting a “shave” session when the Virgin Blue aircraft arrives at the airport.
