Magnetic Island, or simply ‘Maggie’, is shrouded by smooth grey boulders dipping into the sea. Nearly three-quarters of the island is national park and a haven for rock wallabies, bats and brushtail possums. The conditions on the island means it is also a haven for Australia’s most well recognised animal, the koala. Magnetic Island is home to Northern Australia’s largest koala population. Spotting fuzzy grey bums in the foliage, in particular on the iconic Forts Walk, is a mandatory pursuit. To get up close and personal with the iconic Koala head to Bungalow Bay Koala Village for a traditional bush breakfast with the animals. A good network of trails makes for some spectacular bushwalking and the surrounding waters are also part of the precious Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area. In the late afternoon be sure to stop by Geoffery Bay and get acquainted with the local rock wallabies.
On Magnetic Island you’ll discover a refreshing change has taken place with a range of new resort and traditional accommodation to suit your holiday style. Magnetic Island is located just 8km off Townsville and 20 minutes on the SeaLink passenger ferry.
