Every evening between November and April, muttonbirds return to their hillside burrows on the island after spending the day fishing at sea.

Be sure to walk the Bathers Way, a 5-km coastal walk from Nobbys Light House to Merewether and swim in the Merewether Ocean Baths, the largest in the southern hemisphere. Finally, you can see a variety of bird species plus koalas, kangaroos and wombats at Blackbutt Reserve.
Amidst a stunning coastline of rocky headlands and neighbouring the banks of the Hastings River estuary, is the vibrant and unspoilt town of Port Macquarie.The city has a five-star array of beaches from Port Macquarie Beach to Town Beach at the very front of the city centre to the 16km golden swathe of North Beach. You can enjoy wildlife spotting – whales, dolphins and koalas or just hit the beach for a paddle or surf before sampling one of the award-winning local wines. Thanks to its idyllic climate and setting, the area attracts artists who contribute to a thriving arts scene.
