Hobart may not be a renowned summer destination, but summertime in Tasmanian hotspot is full of magnificent surprises.

As the country’s southernmost capital, Hobart experiences more hours of daylight than any other Australian city, but without the sweltering heat associated with summer on the mainland.

While the days are long – extending up to 15 hours on the summer solstice – the city makes the most of the sunlit hours with a number of exciting festivals and events.

Cheer on the crews as they steer their boats into Derwent River, in Australia’s most famous yacht race, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Starting in Sydney Harbour on Boxing Day and culminating in Hobart around 28–31 December, the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race is an icon of Australia's sport – akin to events like the Melbourne Cup, Davis Cup and Australia vs. England test.

Join hundreds of thousands of foodies on Hobart’s waterfront for the Taste Festival. A celebrated annual event, the festival highlights Tasmania’s renowned fresh produce – namely seafood, cheese and berries – and wines and boutique beers. This year’s event will run from 28 December 2012 to 3 January 2013, and entry is free.

Ring in the New Year at one of Australia’s most anticipated music events, Falls Festival. Held an hour’s drive east of Hobart, at Marion Bay, Falls Festival will see artists like Two Door Cinema Club, Hot Chip, Matt Corby and The Flaming Lips kick off 2013 with revelry and high spirits. The event runs from 29 December 2012 to 1 January 2013, and tickets are still available.

Summer is also a fantastic time to experience Hobart and its surrounds through a number of tours and activities.

Discover the city’s long heritage with a visit to the Maritime Museum or Port Arthur. Uncover the area’s acclaimed wilderness and flora and fauna with a trip to Mount Wellington, Mount Field National Park and Tasmania's World Heritage Area. Or experience the city’s spectacular take on culture with a tour of MONO, an eating jaunt to Salamanca Place, or a shopping adventure in Sandy Bay.
