Virgin Blue Announces New Rockhampton-Sydney Flights: “You Rock Rocky!” Launch Fares From $89

19/03/2006

Virgin Blue today announced it will launch Rockhampton-Sydney direct services from Thursday 4 May, 2006 commencing with three flights a week on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

To kick off the new services special $89 “You Rock! Rocky” promotional fares go on sale today on Virgin Blue’s web site. The $89 specials (which include GST and all other taxes) are on sale until midnight 2 April, 2006 for travel between 4 May to 29 June, 2006. Regular prices will include one-way Mid Week Mini Fares from $109* on the net while everyday low fares will start from $129* one-way on the net.

Virgin Blue’s new direct Mackay to Sydney services will compliment the existing triple daily direct flights between Rockhampton and Brisbane which were launched just over three years ago. The decision to offer non-stop Sydney services was the result of strong demand for Virgin Blue connecting services from Rockhampton through to the New South Wales capital.

Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey said, “We have been monitoring the number of connecting bookings for some time and it is clear that the people of Rockhampton will benefit from the convenience of a direct Virgin Blue flight, particularly as we will be the only airline offering this service.”

He continued, “We have a brand new aircraft joining the fleet in May and after comprehensive consideration of a range of route options across Australia, we have committed to boosting services to regional Queensland.”

“The Rockhampton City Council team has been instrumental in securing the service. Leisure and business travellers will have the convenience of a Virgin Blue direct service from Rockhampton to Sydney but it will also be great for the thousands of loyal Rocky based North Queensland Cowboys fans who can now fly to Sydney to support their team, “ he said.

In a double whammy for regional Queensland, Virgin Blue has today confirmed it will also offer direct Sydney flights from Mackay from 3 May, 2006.

“As a Queensland based airline, we support those that support us and we look forward to working with our regional partners to ensure a successful ongoing service that benefits local business, tourism and the community”, Brett Godfrey finished.

Queensland Premier Peter Beattie said the new Virgin flights were a big plus for the communities of Rockhampton and Mackay, and would give more tourists from interstate and around the world a chance to explore the wonderful attractions that are unique to Tropical North Queensland.

“This is great news for the Mackay/Whitsunday and Rockhampton communities, with the chance to get on board Virgin Blue and head to Sydney for the footy.

“The direct flights are also going to open up new opportunities to develop business links, so Virgin Blue is on a winner here.

“It’s great to have the company based in Queensland and serving the travel needs of Queenslanders.”
