Virgin Blue gives WNBL WINGS
Virgin Blue and the ‘Price Attack’ Women’s National Basketball League (WNBL) have announced a new partnership that will see the multi-award winning low fare carrier become the Official Airline partner of the WNBL.
The three-year partnership follows closely after the announcement of Virgin Blue’s relationship with the men’s National Basketball League (NBL) and makes the airline a major partner of basketball in Australia.
Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey, said, “Virgin Blue is pleased to be able to partner with the WNBL. Signing with the women’s league is a natural evolution for us after the establishment of our relationship with the men’s Philips Championship but the WNBL is an attractive partner to be involved with in its own right.”
With eight WNBL teams spread across the country Virgin Blue will provide in excess of 1,200 sectors of flying for the 2004/05 season.
Basketball Australia Chief Executive, Scott Derwin, said, “Signing with Virgin Blue is a coup for the league. Virgin Blue has already demonstrated its commitment to basketball through its relationship with the NBL and now has extended its partnership to encompass one of the world’s top women’s professional leagues as well.”
Whilst full terms of the partnership were not disclosed as per standard League policy, both parties described the partnership as non-traditional and as involving significant marketing and cost-saving benefits for the WNBL.
The ‘Price Attack’ WNBL tipped off its historic 25th season on 1 October and will climax with the Grand Final on 19 February 2005.
